Mailed an item to CA on 8/19 with dc scanned at my post office. So it shows that it entered the system. This is what I get (notice the mention of leaving me pos feedback when I refund his payment). I filed mail theft, requested he begin an INR and am waiting to see what happens next:

****his message:

A very nice agent in my Tiburon P.O. has searched the Tiburon P.O. as well as the in- house computer, and it contains nothing to show that the package ever left the Kenedy P.O.

So...on Wed. 9/3, please begin the inquiry process and return $14.96 to Paypal. I will certainly be pleased if turns up, and will return payment to you if it does. I don't hold much hope, however.
The only that I can think of is postal theft or the label became damaged someway....
Regards....Gary

p.s. When PayPal notifies me, I will be glad to reciprocate in kind and keep your 100%

Was it insured? Not that it really makes a difference when it comes to FB, paypal and DSR's anymore.

I have a feeling that this Christmas season is going to be a real nightmare with the economy the way it is and the new FB system on ebay. It's like an invitation to come shop for free (for some dishonest buyers anyway).

He declined insurance as I have it as optional on all my listings. I think the package will either show up or his carrier didn't scan it and this guy thinks he can get it for free. Within 48 hours the mail theft report will hit the two small PO's and it will shake the package loose from the system (I hope)

Unfortunately, while it may be extortive, it's not feedback extortion per eBay standards.

"or the label became damaged someway...."

This strikes me as an odd thing for someone to mention when they supposedly haven't even seen the package yet.

Want me to drive over to Tiburon and beat him up? I'm way overdue for a Bloody Mary at Sam's.

Was it mailed priority or parcel post? My parcel post are taking about 2 weeks to get from East Coast to West. I've had quite a time with items not being scanned in to the system. There's a huge push on at the PO to scan everything, because it is just NOT happening.

First class Parcel.

Since last Christmas when I had some tubes that were first class parcel be mistaken as Parcel Post, I have stickers that say first class and I have first class parcel post printed on the mailing label.

Stopped at my PO today and showed them his correspondence. They want to know how he knew it was a mailing tube as there is nothing in the system to indicate as such. They think he is trying to pull a fast one and are getting in touch with his CO at his PO.

Good catch. I knew the label thing was suspicious but this is even better. You have good postal people.

There are no poor people in Tiburon so he has no excuse for being a thief. Not that being poor is an excuse for stealing and lying but you know what I mean.

My offer still stands!

Beth,

Am I missing something? Where did he indicate that it was a mailing tube?

Personally... I think he's either scamming you, or jumping the gun. First-class can easily take 2-weeks to go coast-to-coast... and toss in a federal holiday, and it can be even worse. Anyone else notice how when the postal employees take a day off... it puts them a week behind?

Sounds like you're doing everything right. But don't you hate the hassle paypal/ebay puts you through for such a small amount of money?!?!

He mentions the tube in one of about 5 emails I have from him. The one above just mentions leaving feedback after the refund with a veiled reference to my 100%. Frankly, I don't care what my feedback % is anymore since I closed my store.

Isn't it nice to not have to care anymore?

These are the type of customers that I do NOT miss from eBay! I think eBay breeds the all-too-dangerous customer-is-always-right mentality... which can be easily abused by scammers.

Just one more thought though... Could his mailing tube reference have come from your shipping info in your listing? (where you explain that you ship things in tubes, unless asked to ship flat).

Absolutely! Here is his email:

Beth...
You are correct. The package (mailing tube) was due to arrive here on 8/22 , according to my local USPO ! Seems like they've lost another one...2nd. one in two months !!!
P.O. wants to know size of mailing tube. About 10 in. ?
NUTS ! I guess that it's insurance on every package from now on...
I will let you know if it arrives by Tues.
Thank you for your offer to help...

And then this one:

My contact at the Tiburon P.O. seems to think that something is a bit strange at the Kennedy P.O. Records show that there TWO different arrival times recorded for your package but no departure information !? He is planning to check on it again on Wed. Very strange...
Regards...

There are not two arrival times. I used ENDICIA with the Scan form option. Once they scan the form all items are accepted at that time. Every package mailed that day has the same acceptance time in the USPS system:
Shipment Accepted; August 19, 2008, 4:14 pm, KENEDY, TX 78119

And, all but his have been delivered.

I just looked at one of your listings and you say you are going to mail in a tube:

SHIPPING INFORMATION

We combine shipping and all items will ship for the cost of one. First class and international ship via secure mailing tube unless otherwise noted. If you prefer your item shipped flat, please let us know.

So that doesn't mean that he necessarily has seen the package.

That is correct Mary Ann...which is why I answered Vintage Paper ads with an ABSOLUTLEY and then posted both of the buyers other emails.

I don't always mail in a tube, depends on the age of the paper.

He may have discerned it from the listing and reported it to his friend at the PO. I may have read his email "wrong", as it seemed that the PO told him it was in a tube.

Anyway, we will see what happens. He has yet to file an INR, which I requested he do.

Sorry - I didn't know what the absolutely referred to.

I hope it works out ok. His email does sound like it has veiled threats and yet perhaps he is being honest. It wouldn't surprise me if the blame rested solely with the USPS.

Are you sure you want him to file an INR - won't that hurt your search standing?

I closed my eBay store and am taking September off. By then I will probably not be a Powerseller and search won't matter.

I need a break from eBay!
