I don't think Craig's list is appropriate for most collectible items, but I've really been impressed with it from a buyers and sellers viewpoint. I bought a $400 electric guitar set-up for $60 - it looked brand new, the kid selling it never learned how to tune it- I paid cash after testing it. The cheapest I could find on eBay was $85 (with shipping) and the fuzzy photos could have disguised some major flaws.

We had a major garage sale recently. We paid $45 to place a classified in the newspaper - all the toys sold the first day but nobody was interested in my Mom's ancient but working infallible Maytag washer & dryer. Worried that we would have to pay someone to cart them away, I took a quick pic and posted them on Craig's list. By 9:00 am the next day, they were sold (we received at least 10 calls before I canceled the listing).

Flush with money from his sold toys at the garage sale, my son wanted me to bid on a PSP on eBay, current bid at $65, plus he wanted to pay $24 for 2-day shipping. I didn't want it to come from my Paypal account and it was Paypal only. I asked him to look on Craig's list. Voila! The same product with a memory card for $70- no shipping, immediate delivery.

You can post up to 4 photos on Craig's listings. No listing fees- no FVF - no PayPal fees - no shipping! I think savvy shoppers will start checking Craig's list first, and savvy sellers will list gently used items on Craig's list first, before eBay.

Craig's List has become very popular in my area. From almost no listings a year ago, to pages of garage sales currently.
The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel want ads have shrunk to almost nothing.

I haven't tried selling anything on there yet, but I used it to rent out an apartment we have - and it turned out well. They do generate a fair amount of spam though.

I noticed I get a much younger 'crowd' there when I put the rental up.

Whatever happened to Jack who used to post here and was doing alot of Craig's list sales?

I noticed the garage sale listing on Craig's List is getting longer in our area as well. I think it's too expensive for most to be listing in the local newspaper.
I may try some mid century furniture items there myself as I sold a Victorian Sofa and chair using a local trading post paper that wouldn't sell on ebay. Mid Century stuff always does well with a younger crowd.

I used Craigslist all summer for my listings. For me it worked well. I sold all types of things & brought in as much cash as I needed to on a monthly basis.
I also got a spectacular chandelier to replace the original one from my dining room. It is traditional, solid brass. It cost $20.

Didn't I read somewhere that eBay bought into Craiga List.

A friend of mine gets lots of stuff at freecycle. She even picked up a high chair for me to use whan my granddaughter visits.
Everything is free, you just have to go & pick it up. It's nationwide, just look for your home town listings.

I LOVE CRAIGSLIST!!!!

I started selling & buying on Craigslist. If you start selling, be sure to open up an account so you can easily launch your listings and delete & relaunch them for newer coverage.

Yes,

Ebay does own Craigslist.

they own 25% stake in it. I doubt that the Craigslists owners will ever allow Ebay buy anymore to get the grubby hands on it to make Ebay's necessary changes(for the betterment of our sellers). they would ruin it and start charging fees coming & going.

mamachia, when you sell on craigs list is it an auction or set price. Also do you mail the items you sell or does the buyer pick up.
I kinda get the idea that you have to sell local.

I was just there looking around, can't figure out how it works.

Hey McJane,
I only sell locally in Orange county, CA. but I would assume that if you wanted to post in other areas, that you could arrange for shipping fees. I would probably attempt to use Google checkout for payment.
When I list something, I post a price with the addition of OBO in the price area or in the body of the listing.
One of my clients started listing some stuff on craigslist last year and he loves it. He generally sells within a day or two or he will have to relist about 5-6 times for the right buyer to see it.
I currently have posted furniture, 6' wood window & other assorted household items.

NOTE: be mindful of those idiot scammers they are plentiful on Craigslist.

Both eBay and Craigs List have filed suit against each other. It was not a happy marriage.
