It is academic now that I'm a house-husband, but I had been taking this day off ever since 2001. It is much more personal than Memorial Day for me. Friends died that day, neighbors too, and nobody I worked with downtown has ever been quite the same; some of them were psychologically shattered. It still makes me cry to think about it, and probably always will.

If my wife hadn't decided to take our son to school that morning and had let the nanny do it as usual, I'd probably be a widower today.
