A friend (some friend!) wants me to sell a tuba on Ebay. I took it to UPS to have them give me an estimate. It would be about $275.00 without the box and packaging. I was going to look into Greyhound, but got scared off by a website with some horror stories. Any advice?

Personally, I'd take a few minutes and teach the friend how to sell on eBay and let him/her deal with it.

I'd point him in the direction of Craigslist.

Actually I have tried to teach him how to list on Ebay several times. He is at the point where he can finally minimize a window instead of closing it. sigh I did teach him to put things on craigslist, but he forgets to go to the email and click the link. sigh Yes, it is collectible. I sold a trombone for him that went to $310, but that was a piece of cake to ship in comparison to this. I have suggested craigslist for this, but I think Iowa isn't the place to get decent money out of it. It may have to be craigslist anyway.

Thanks for the support!

Check you USPS rates. I sold a tuba and i'm not sure but I think the shipping was 55.00 or something in that range. I shipped it USPS Priority Mail. Mine had a case so it really was easy to ship as long as you have a box that it fits into.

How much does it weigh?

Let's put it this way - is it worth having your DSRs lowered to sell this for him - anyone buying it will probably slam you on the shipping cost which could possibly lower you in the search results.

Craigs list, at this time of year when bands are still forming, all school rentals are taken and parents are in a panic to obtain one quickly, makes perfect sense. Been there, done that.

This is a full-sized tuba that would have to ship in two boxes. It has two cases, one for the horn and one for the body of the tuba. I can't remember what UPS said it weighed. I suppose my friend would since he was along.

I am sure I am naive but I don't worry about DSR's. I figure if I am quoting the shipping upfront in the auction description, they are free to bid or not. I'm not a PowerSeller. I have large sales for awhile and then I tend to dink around. People, don't ask what I think of Ebay right now. I tend to go off on a rant!!

I don't know that parents would buy this tuba. It is a collector's tuba that needs restored. There is an Ebay approved seller in Des Moines. He may have this tuba landed on his doorstep. haha!

I'm not a collectible musical instrument expert but "needs restoring" "high shipping" raises red flags. They should really get an appraisal from a neutral expert if they expect significant upside. Otherwise, I would offer it first locally with a price they could live with, then at auction (perhaps not eBay's) if the upside is high enough,

"collectible" tuba...imagine what size house you'd need if you were a tuba collector...

I wouldn't do that listing! Your friend needs to find some other way to sell it, like Craigslist. It just sounds to me like potential problems.

There are other tubas currently on eBay (and you could also check past sales) to get an idea of what they bring and shipping. One currently listed ships from Wisconsin to New England for approximately 50.00 via UPS.

If they are at all knowledgeable about tubas (i.e., they know what one is), they will understand that it will not be inexpensive to ship.

Years ago I helped out my neighbor who was having problem paying rent by buying a silver trombone from him.
He warned me everytime I dropped it on the floor,it will lose $10 in value.
He suggested that I go to a flower shop to get the right box for packing.
What he did not tell me is that UPS no longer accept antique musical instrument.
Anyway,I sold it on Ebay for around 200 dollars, the buyer was not pleased as it was not in the condition he expects so he shipped it back to me via UPS.
I filed for insurance and got the money, then I got my trombone back and then the bidder disappeared from cyberspace.
Without opening the package,I relisted it again with no picture and got 25 dollars for it.
The bidder was not happy,he wants half of his shipping back.
I said no.
I learn a lesson ,dont deal in something I dont understand and dont ship large delicate items like a musical instrument.
