Has anyone used a Canon Power Shot A590IS? I've had my Sony Mavica FD83 for years and it's been fine for eBay, etc. For some reason, the floppy disks aren't working as well. I'm having trouble importing the images.

Anyway, I've been looking for an easy, relatively cheap camera and the Canon seems to be a good.

TIA for any comments.

Sharon

Sharon,

This is not a technical anwer as I do not take the photos but we bought a Canon Power Shot A640 a few months ago and it takes super photos especially close-ups.

Or ----
You could purchase another Mavica for eBay pictures. They are getting really cheap to purchase. I have yet to find an easier to use, easier to download, cheaper to operate camera than my Mavicas.
All those fancy mega pixel cameras are fine for "real" photography, but nothing beats a Mavica for eBay.

You can get a USB memory card reader for a few bucks anywhere. Just stick your memory card in the slot and upload to your computer. No more worries about having the right USB adaptor etc - any camera is easy to use nowadays.

I'm dreading the day my Mavica bites the dust..probably should look at buying another to keep in reserve. There might be some new- fangled other cameras out there but I'm so used to my easy-as-pie Mavica, don't want to change.

GeneralFunds - Sharon,

When you go to upload your pictures, you may start having trouble trying to upload directly off of the floppy disks themselves.
This is pretty common for these camera's (or maybe its because the floppys are old, who knows) - but *if* that is how your doing it - try manually moving the folder of images off of the floppy and onto your computer/HD prior to uploading.

Uploading directly from your hard drive/computer works much better than off of the floppy, as the computer doesn't have to try and both read the floppy quickly and upload the data at the same time. (which is problematic if your floppy disks are older, or perhaps even the floppy drive itself.)

If your having trouble just manually moving the files from the floppy to your computer, before you even try to upload - try it on another computer and verify the same issue exists (ruling out the drive Vs the disks.) - If the same happens on another machine, it's probably time to get a new camera.

Don't get too swept up in the new available features, as most new camera's will take pictures much too large for eBay to use anyway. Plus depending on who you use for image hosting, many (especially eBay) will decrease the file size (and as a result the quality) while you upload, usually taking away any advantage you had with a larger clear image to begin with.

Use an image hosting service like Vendio (hint hint) or other that doesn't downsize photo's as much, so you can get the best possible image for the size of the file. (I usually try to aim for around 2-300k per max, especially if using more than 3 or so images.)

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I've been downloading my floppys to Vendio/Auction Watch for 9 years. Never had a problem.
Picture size is between 30 and 75K.

max40 - uploading directly from the floppy is fine to do, it's just that it *can* be problematic for some users and a good way to rule that out of the equation is to copy the files to your computer prior to upload to see if you still have trouble or not.

Chris

The apostrophe has three uses:

1) to make a noun ( "cat" ) possessive ( "She brought in the white cat's new litterbox" )

2) to indicate omission of letters ( "The white cat won't use the new litterbox." )

3) to form certain plurals ( "She gave up and took the new box down to the feline rescue shelter where it is now the cats' litterbox." )

Words that end in -y generally are made plural with the -ies ending. ( "She also took a box of old 5.25-inch floppies and suspended them by strings, making great toys for the shelter cats." )

Shouldn't #3 refer only to plural possessives?

First of all, I want to thank all of you for your previous answers.

I did buy the Canon and boy, am I sorry!

You were right. There's nothing like the Mavica. I am bidding now on a used one.

I have a really dumb question for Roadsmith. When you say you use the memory stick, is there a special program to get the pics onto your computer after you insert it?

Sorry, but I just don't know how to know and have determined that the floppy drive is no longer working on my 'puter.

Many thanks,

Sharon

Generalfunds: I'm not the one who talked about the memory stick. That was Neglus. However, I can't blame you for getting us mixed up, since we're both such wonderful people.

Oh dear - I was talking about using a memory card reader with cameras other than Mavicas. I am not familiar with the memory stick but I imagine those could be used with a card reader but not sure. I just put the card in the reader and usually a program comes up prompting me to get pictures from camera... but if that program doesn't come up, I just click on the "my computer" icon and find the drive where the pictures are (usually E but I am sure that varies). I click on that drive, select all and then indicate I want to copy the pictures, set up a folder in "My Pictures", and then copy (or move if you want to clear the card).

I notice Mavicas come with CD's too - are those cameras the same quality as the floppies?

whether you buy the memory stick or card reader, the manufacturer should include instructions .
I know I have the Sandisk card reader,I have to call them to help me.

Have never used one, but from specs, they are a higher end camera. Not up to todays cameras, but better resolution than the floppy disc version. Kind of between an eBay camera and a real one.

Thanks again!

And I did confuse Roadsmith & Neglus --- sorry. You are both so kind with answers always so thanks anyway.

The Canon isn't a bad camera. Just too sophisticated for me. Not sure if I'll sell it or use it for regular pics but I definitely need the Mavica for eBay.

Off again to the hunt!

Thanks.

You should try to get a Mavica that uses either a memory stick or a floppy - they are great. They shouldn't be much more expensive and the memory stick is so much faster - I'll never go back to floppies.
As for the floppy drive - they don't seem to last for long periods of time. I'm on my 3rd (and last) external floppy drive now. But at least they only cost about $40.
