I've always called these jade trees and supposedly the leaves and flowers are all carved from semi-precious stones like quartz, carnelian (sp?) etc. and to me they always look like glass.

Knowing nothing about stones - do these look to be carved stone?

I doubt it,it would be hard to carve these petals from semi precious stones.
Did you feel it.press it against your cheek, how cold is it?glass is cold, colder than jade(jade is a poor conductor of heat but not as cold as glass).
It may not be glass either as it will break,it could be some composite material, may be reconstituted semi precious stone.
They do this a lot, ground lapis lazulis, turquoise etc into powder and then add resin and pour into a mold
It is a very striking piece.

Jade does come in every color of the rainbow and some very intricate carvings are done.

Could it be real jade and/or gemstones used
for the tree? Yes, it could.

Is it? Can not tell from a photo (although, to me, the texture appears too glassy in the top photo).

Suggestion: Check the Show Calendar pages at Lapidary Journal.com for a gem and mineral show near you. Most mineral dealers are very helpful.

They are real semi-precious gemstones or jade. I've had several of these. They were really popular at one time. The ones by designers, of course, bring very good money. It's a great gemstone/jade tree. It could be all jade. It's hard to tell from a photo. Jade gets dyed all the time. I love it!!!

Jade can be either jadeite or nephrite.
Jadeite comes in white, black, varying shades of green and red (not bright red or fuchca red).
The most sought after jadeite is emerald or imperial green.
Nephrite comes in black, varying shades of green, dark red and white. The most sought after nephrite is mutton fat white and spinach green.
Jade is compact and hard, poor conductor of heat and translucent, never transparent.
Because it is a poor conductor of heat,it is always cold to the touch.
Because it is compact,it is heavier than other stones and hard to penetrate.
It is impossible to dye jade, many tried .
Back in the old days, shoppers will carry a bottle of nail polish remover to remove the dye on the surface of the stone.
The jade you see these days with green color and sell for little is so called 'polymer jade'.
Subject jade to high temperature to breakdown its structure and then inject dye, then stabilise it with resin .It can be carved just like natural jade,in wholesale market they can sell you large block of these so called 'B'ed jade and you can take it home and carve it anyway you want.
This jade tree is not jade tree, jade does not come in fuchia color, nor does it come in the white color as shown in the picture,if real jade is carved as petals,it would show its tranlucent character, same can be said of the orange petals.
This piece looks like commercial mass produced piece from China or Taiwan with synthetic material.

I think they look too glassy as well - though the leaves are a bit cool temperature wise. I've sold maybe 5 or 6 of these - never one this large - 22" - during 3 of the sales I received an email from different buyers telling me the leaves and petals were gemstones and listing the names of each - carnelian for the orange flowers, quartz for the white, etc.

I tend to agree with Hwa Hwa on this though, I really think it's a ground gemstone mixed with a polymer that only technically could be called a gemstone.

I'll just list it as truthfully as I can and see what happens - I only paid $5 for it.

Thanks!

I'd be interested to know myself. I've seen these as well and never really knew.
Sounds like you got a great deal
