Hi Everyone, What would be the formal name for this lidded Nippon bowl. The bowl part is attached to the little plate. I'm guessing some kind of dip goes in it. Plate measures about 8-1/2 inches across and the bowl measures about 4-1/4 inches across. Thanks in advance for any help !

My first thought was that it is a condiment server - but most condiments have a little slot in the lid for a spoon - so I wonder if it for serving something that does not require a spoon - perhaps butter?

Yup, it is a butter - if you search completed auctions for Nippon butter - theres several that have this shape - and the one that sold for $36.00 is almost exactly like yours. It's a sweet piece - if it has the green mark, that is the mark used on the best porcelain, the blue mark is used on porcelain not quite as fine.
