Did I miss some news???
I did a search for something I am selling. One word was in the title and the other word was in the subtitle. My item didn't come up in the search. So, I eliminated the subtitle word and it came up. I tried it with a few other auctions and find the same thing.
Did I miss an an announcement about subtitles not being searchable??? Why pay for a subtitle if it doesn't work?

I don't know when ebay did this but it's been a while now. It's hardly worth the cost anymore. I would pay extra for longer titles but I don't see that happening anytime soon

You can use them to make the item stand out on a search page or to highlight something extra you are offering - ie FREE SHIPPING! or "Free gift with every order" etc.
They aren't worth the $ for sure but if you are already offering free shipping and getting them for free, then the price is right.

I believe I heard a long time ago that the subtitles aren't searchable solely with key words.
