My mom isn't able to crochet anymore and, while cleaning out a closet, I found a whole bunch. Some is generic colors, like those used for crafts, afghans, etc. She has an equal amount in red, green and white. I was wondering if I'd do better with a larger lot or by splitting them into Christmas and 'other.' And, if splitting is best, is now OK (thinking that people might work all year on Christmas items) or should I wait until some later time?

Thanks for any thoughts. If you're interested in the yarn before I list it, my address is this username at Hotmail.

Hi, yes, I sell yarn on eBay. I find that "genercic" yarns doesn't sell well, for me anyway. I am in Canada and most of my yarn is purchased by US buyers, so they don't want to pay the high postage prices from Canada for something they can buy in a local store.

Your yarn either has to be discontinued, hard-to-find, or cheap in order to sell. I sell mostly discontinued yarn by the skein. If I just have 3 or 4 skeins, I put it in one lot.

The best thing to do is search for the yarn you have for sale on eBay from other sellers, then you can see what they are selling and for how much. Check the completed items, they are the test for what is actually selling and for how much.

Thanks for the help. I'm still undecided about what to do. I have 25 skeins or so of red, white and green and another 25-30 of assorted other colors. I'm pretty sure none of them are any newer than 15-20 years ago.

I'm not expecting big money but I'm also not excited about taking a bunch of pictures and listing a bunch of details for a 99c auction. The closed auctions I searched a few months ago didn't give me any clear answers.

I guess I'm leaning toward trying to sell everything in 2 lots. One remaining question then - if I split them into the lots I mentioned originally, do you think I should save the Christmas colors for later in the year or go ahead an list everything now?

Thanks again.

Pesonally, I find that Christmas items sell all year. I used to take them off after Christmas, but this year I left them on, and sold several after Christmas.

I don't think I would put too many skeins in one auction. You can put in your description that you have more listed, and buyers can always bid on more than one auction. But if buyers only want a small amount, you will exclude them from being interested in your bigger amounts.

I am amazed at how many buyers just purchase one skein of yarn, it always puzzles me what they use it for.
