I have a buyer in France who purchased an item and wants it shipped there. He suggested he could have it shipped to Chicago, but he tried to send me an International E-Check and the address still showed France. I nixed that immediately.

USPS guidelines state the package cannot be larger than 108" (length + girth).

My item without a box measures: 28 x 25 x 14 or 106".

He keeps telling me that others ship the same thing to him via USPS. I just don't see where that is possible unless they leave no space for packing materials.

I am not about to throw a $1500 Eames Shell Chair into a box with no padding all the way to France... or anywhere for that matter.

Anyone have experience in shipping larger pieces? Am I missing something on the USPS website? It shows International Priority and Global Express as the only two options.

May be the post office does not measure the box or just go by what the shipper stated on the form.
How much does it weigh?

After a certain weight and size, only priority and express are options for international through USPS.

I guess I would have cashed the e-check and shipped the item to Chicago. My assumption would be he knew how to get the thing from the windy city to his home on the cheap.

I know in Houston, there is a Japanese service which will consolidate shipments for folks who want to ship items to Japan ,mostly expatriates .
I think they use freight forwarders .
The Vietnamese also have same service plus remmiting fund to Vietnam without going to a local US bank and pay like 35-45 dollars wire transfer fee and foreign exchange fee.

Hello. My concern in shipping to Chicago is that it wasn't the address shown in the payment. All the buyer has to do is claim the item was not received and I lose all the money. Not something I would risk for $1500.

The weight is actually quite low. It is a fiberglass shell seat, so the total package wouldn't weigh more than 15-20 pounds. It is more about the dimensions.

I am still trying to figure out how someone would pack the shell seat and the base together and make the maximum dimensions allowed. Either he is FOS, someone cheated and lied on the packing info and didn't get caught, or they packed it without a box or a box that was bulging. Obviously, nothing I am willing to risk and have issues with.

I have sent him an email giving him all of the information, and told him that if he has a suggestion in how to pack this to fit in those dimensions to let me know.

If a seller packs it well and it is 2 inches above the USPS limits, the clerk at the counter may not bother to measure and takes his words for it.
Or if he requests a pickup at his home or store, the USPS postman takes the shipment back to post office and no one checks.
Or could your buyer mean UPS or DHL/
USPS to France for under 25 lbs priority is like 25 dollars ,check USPS website.
If you are afraid he will claim no receipt, then insure the package.

hwa- its not an issue of weight, it is an issue of dimension.

i would love to ship this to france for $98, but it is impossible to pack it properly to do so... and if the package gets held up due to dimensions, I will not get a refund for shipping. If the item is damaged in transit with a box too small, I cannot win an insurance claim.

the chair doesn't even belong to us. It belongs to our employee... we are consigning it.

I should also mention... my shipping charge for the buyer to Chicago is FREE. So, if I ship it to his packing company in Chicago, he can pay them to pack and ship it to him in France. He just needs to send payment in a method I do not have to worry about.

sounds like shipping to Chicago is the better way for you and could be for him.
I though Paypal will let us add another confirmed address?
If he has a US bank account,he can do online banking ACH and send you the payment or he can wire transfer from France.

Just came up with an idea,Paypal always tout we can send money to anyone, anywhere and it does not have to be for purchase of goods.
Why dont you send him a paypal invoice for consulting to the tune of 1500 dollars, then there is no need to show online tracking.

Shag - try these people. They aren't as cheap as USPS but much less than anyone else.

I think you have my old customer. Same item to France. I took a chance and was able to ship it USPS by removing the base. I seem to recall that it would then fit into one of UHaul's boxes. 24 x 18 or something like that.
I used edge protector and it arrived OK. But then again I only had to answer to myself.

Sounds like this French buyer buys to resell in France and has a service in Chicago which would consolidate and forward his goods.
If so,why not ask him to add that address to his paypal account.

Yes it is online trackable.
They use different carriers of which DHL is one but it wasn't the one I used (customer picks).
I only used them once but it worked out OK.

But does the PAYPAL dispute software goes to its site and find the tracking number?
Or do we have to ask a paypal person to key in the URL and then tracking number manually?
See what if we throw up a fake site which said ABC freight company, you know like that movie -Robert Redford and Paul Newman

Or look at it this way,why does Ebay have to judge its sellers based on some stupid remarks from some spoiled brats who are often quick to anger if they dont get things their way?
