I just thought I should let you know that Canada Post has a potential strike starting on May 25th. If you have Canadian buyers, your packages could get held up.

As an update....The Union representing Canadian Postal Workers has just given the Canada Post Corporation their 72 hours notice of a strike which will start at 11.59pm on Thursday.

Bottom line...no mail will move except for Purolater Courier which is partly owned by Canada Post.

what me worried?
I refused a package on May 14,the postman took it back to the post office and turned it over to lady who should ship it back to the seller.
Well, she went on vacation and left the package in her work bin.
ON may 24th,I filed a case with central post office customer service, they called our post office and they found the package and ship it out to Houston sorting facility.
Houston sorting facilty sent it back to them, then they sent it back to Houston sorting facilty which sent it back to them again.
I called the central USPS customer service and they said the case is closed,so I opened another case and asked them to continue investigating.
So now my post office sent it to a different sorting facilty which in turn sent it to the same old sorting facility,we will find out what happens next?
here is what you will see on USPS tracking-

hwahwa...don't bet on it! The Canadian Union of Postal Workers are not inclined to settle this one in a hurry. I would recommend that you do not send anything to Canada via USPS until this is over and even then it will be slow until they are caught up.

Although we have not had a Postal strike since 1997 here I do remember vividly all of the prior Post Office strikes as I was working in a 'Corporate' job then and drove to all the small Towns around Calgary, Alberta delivering Invoices to customers and picking up cheques in payment just so 'my' Company didn't suffer!!

Make no mistake this type of strike does affect businesses big and small.

Just to update you:-

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has been operating rotating strikes at various locations since June 2nd.
Tomorrow they will be on strike at 14 postal depots thoughout Canada.

The volume of mail has dropped dramatically as people (me included) do not want to put anything in the mail system and then have them call a total strike thereby stranding our packages somewhere in the system.

Because of the drop in volume Canada Post has announced that they have cut back mail delivery to three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Union is hopping mad!! Canada Post kinda called their bluff.

otteropp: I have been following it closely. It is so hard to know what to do. I really can't afford not to sell, and I have put my store "on vacation" 4 times now, and then taken it off.

Appently Canada Post is also refusing to give sick pay to workers while the Union is calling strikes.

I saw on the website that volume of mail has dropped 50% since the strikes started.

I gues we can expect higher postage rates in the near future!

amber: Yes, it is hard to know what to do.

I set up Google alerts so I keep receiving everything about the strike. I also keep checking in on the CUPW website.

I check every day on the Canada Post site and if you go to their 'Employees' tab you can actually read all the comments that the Postal Workers put on there. A huge majority of them want to vote on the latest Canada Post offer but the Union will not call for a vote.

I put my Store on vacation as soon as they called the 72 hour strike notice because I did not want to risk anything being stuck in a Post Office warehouse if a general strike happens.

It has put a dent in my income that's for sure but if items are stuck in a warehouse I could be dinged by Buyers on my DSR's and I do not want that to happen because althoug EBay Canada has said they will not let Canadian Sellers suffer DSR problems due to the strike....I somehow think I won't leave my destiny in EBay's hands!!

Well finally...after 2 weeks of rotating strikes by the Postal Union, Canada Post announced tonight a complete shutdown of operations and a 'lock-out'.

It is sad because reading the Canada Post employees comments many of them are furious at the Union.

Here's an article about it.

If you have any items in the mail to Canadians it may be a while before they arrive!

Go to eBay preferences and choose to block shipment to Canada. Buyers from Canada will be unable to purchase from you.

When strike is over make changes to allow shipment to Canada. Change is immediate to all your items currently listed.

Good idea, Bill. All US Sellers should be doing that.

From all accounts there is a lot of mail stacked up in the processing plants as the Union was on rotating strikes for 2 weeks prior to this.

I won't be re-opening my EBay Store until at least a week after the strike is over.

This is from AMZN to its sellers-

Hello from Amazon Services,

Our records show that you have shipped one or more orders to Canada in the last year. Please be aware that as of June 15, 2011 Canada Post has suspended operations. All Canada Post mail processing plants and letter carrier depots are closed. More information about the service suspension can be found on the Canada Post website:

http://clients.infopost.ca/en/

As of June 16, 2011 the United States Postal Service (USPS) will be suspending all mail service to Canada with the exception of Global Express Guaranteed. More information on the impact to USPS can be found on their website (scroll down to the International - Canada section):

http://www.usps.com/communications/news/serviceupdates.htm

If you normally use USPS to ship orders to Canada, you will need to use an alternative carrier for the duration of service suspension. If you are unable to switch carriers, we recommend that you disable the International shipping option for your listings in Manage Inventory:

Smart Bulletin from Amazon!

Has EBay in the US done the same? I don't think so on the .com site because I have looked for something somewhere to see that they even acknowledge it.

On EBay.ca at least they have been following up with news.

It looks as if the government are going to step in and order a back-to-work next week, so anyone with mail on the way to Canada, it should arrive okay, but I am sure it will take a while to get the backlog taken care of, and everything up and running again.

I am surprised postal workers are allowed to go on strike,I know some industries, workers either cannot strike or if they do,they can be ordered back to work.
Remember the air traffic controllers?

I always admired Ronald Reagan for his 'Air Traffic Controllers' stand!

Canada Post is a Crown Corporation but they are not classed as 'Essential Workers' and therefore have the right to go on strike however they are being ordered back to work however the Government had to give them 48 hours noteice during which time they could settle the Contract and then it will be enacted some time next week.

Well, we are heading out on a cruise to Alaska on July 3rd until July 10th so I will try to ignore EBay until we return!
My first 'ocean' cruise. We have been on a River Cruise in Europe and I loved it but have to admit I am nervous about going on an Ocean cruise. I have a tough time on our BC Ferry system but decided it was time to face the fear.

My sister in England waited until she was 80 years old to face the same fear and then went from England to New York on the Cunard Queen Elizabeth and her return trip was in a Force 9 Gale!
She now spends her time booking and waiting for the next trip! She is now heading for 84!

Oh no......the Union of Postal Workers is now going to mount a legal challenge through the Court system to have the 'Back to work' legislation overturned!

This was announced about an hour ago...just what we don't need!

The Postal employees are back at work but there is a laege backlog of mail both within Canada and coming in from other Countries.
Your USPS issued a release to say that they would provide the 'held' mail for Canada in stages so as not to overwhelm the system.

I would say that you are perfectly safe in mailing to Canada however just let your Buyer know that it will take longer to arrive than normal. Most Canadians are well aware of the delays right now so don't worry too much.
