There is a bigger picture-people are buying something which can at least hold its purchasing power if not appreciate in this period of uncertainty of currency devaluation, inflation, political and social unrest.
Greece,Ireland,Portugal,Spain need bailout,Egypt,Syria,Lebanon,Yemen,Libya are wartorn,Pakistan is a time bomb ticking away.
No different than back in the old days, people start hoarding gold, silver, stamps, small bills, even ivory and coral are better than a worth less or worthless IOU.
Ever wonder why people have gold tooth ?
and Indian women count their dowry in number of gold bracelets on their arms?
And that 24k gold ,not 14 K !
A true Indian would not consider anything less than 22k gold as gold, they think 14k is a joke!

when people are uneasy ,they try to preserve what they have, they are swapping cash for other assets, hoping these assets will save the day.
When Kuwait citizens fled Kuwait into neighboring countries,no one would accept their Kuwaiti currency or credit cards, what they would accept is gold !
Gold,not Barbie doll,Cabbage patch kid,coca cola collectable,or 16th century cherry wood dining table !

Where have you been ?Tiptoeing in the rose bush with Tiny Tim?
I got up early this morning and decided to bid on some gold related items on Ebay,I thought I was going to win all of them.
Lo and behold, after putting a bid in the last 20 seconds,3 bidders outbidded me!
I was outbidded on every item!

If you want to join Kovels online newsletter - be very careful that you don't buy a subscription to their mailed newsletter. I did that and it cost me $27. I thought I was signing up for a free newsletter.
However I do enjoy the online newsletter to this day..

Thanks! I bought a book from them thanks to your link. Hopefully it translates to identifying several pieces and making millions of dollars... otherwise it will just collect dust like the rest of them. lol.

We received our book, or I should say pamphlet. I shouldn't be too surprised, but it wasn't very informative.
It is obvious that they took the easy way out to create this booklet. 99% of the marks that they identify are legible on the actual piece of pottery. If I can read them, then why do I need this book? What I had hoped for was something that identified more difficult items to identify. Items with initials or symbols instead of full names would have been most beneficial.
Kovels actually does make books like that. They have a book of marks and a "new book of marks". I'm sure they are more pricey than the pamphlets. It's been a while since I looked at one of them, but they have marks in lots of different categories - like animals, wreaths, crowns - etc. in addition to an alphabetical section.
