We went on a long 3 day road trip out of town.

Spent the first day meandering through thrift shops and then at the very last stop found our golden ticket that made the whole trip worth every penny.

We bought 2 famous designer chairs with a matching ottoman, and a coffee table that retail new for over $19,000 at hivemodern.com. We paid $1400. I think we can sell all 4 pieces and get about $8000-9000.

There were plenty of other great treasures we came across, but none like that. Every summer we talk about what treasure we may discover and this has been one of the better summers so far.

WOW!! How great to find something that fantastic. Road trips are also necessary for sanity!!

Yes, so are concerts. We caught our favorite band on the trip. It was tons of fun. Ironically, I had our van windows tinted last Friday to provide privacy. I was pretty concerned having that furniture sitting in the back of our van for two nights in hotel parking lots.

Great finds.
So will you ebay them or send to auction?

I am ebaying them. They are not old (2003) and I am confident we can get a fair price on eBay without having to wait out an auction.

I brought my camera and computer on the trip, so we found a modern architects office and I took photos on the side of their building during the evening hours after they closed. While taking the photos a mother quail flew in about 10 feet away from us with a dozen babies in hot pursuit of her. As we were packing up I glanced in the lobby of the building and noticed two chairs in their lobby from the same designer... Mies Van Der Rohe. It was perfect.

I've had an offer on the table already, though only $400 including shipping. The table new is only $779. I would like to get $500 out of it.

Ok, it just got even better. We purchased a lamp at the same store for $32 marked down because apparently everyone else thought it was ugly.

I was getting it ready to list when I started researching it. Found it in 1000 Lamps book. It is a Mario Arnaboldi Mira task lamp. A floor lamp version went for $1000 at auction in Los Angeles a few months back.

This is by far the best excursion we have had since starting over 8 years ago.

Its encouraging to those of us still searching for those undiscovered treasures to read about others who have found them!

Shag is a pro,he knows where to look and what to look.
I wont know the difference if a real Picasso shows up in a thrift shop!
Either his print or in person!

Thanks for the compliments hwa. I really appreciate it. We have worked very hard since starting our business 8 years ago. When we first started, we had no direction other than finding interesting/fun things. At the time we were way over our heads, but we stuck with it. Every single day is a learning experience.

We closed our retail store a few months ago... FINALLY!!! Neither Cindy nor I have missed any of it. We are now renting space at a small dealer collective in the center of one of the most popular areas of Portland. We are with 4 other dealers. It is a new experience, but very enjoyable. We are selling as much from our small 400 sq ft space as we have in the past and we are around others who have even more experience than us. So, we also get to see what others are buying and selling.

Well, we have sold the chairs and ottoman to a gentleman in Florida for $7500 and just sold the coffee table for $475.

We discounted the costs on the chairs/ottoman since we don't have the extra $300 in freight for a 2nd shipment.
