i have noticed almost everything these guys find in a storage bin seems to work ,i guess maybe 30% of the items i buy have issues and the come from inside someones home, not a dirty storage bin with no a/c.

also every valuable item they find seems to be covered with a tarp or blanket ,so the bidders can not see it ..?

example i bought 2 reel to reels ,and 2 marantz stereos, out of the 4 items only one does not have issues.i can sell the other 3 but at a greatly reduced price.

Every single one of those shows is FAKE FAKE FAKE.

FAKE: The storage units they bid on are plants.

FAKE: The items that are in these units are plants.

FAKE: The amount they sell items for is fake. I have seen plenty of items undervalued on these shows for the same items we sell. I saw a lamp they gave a $75 value. I have sold the exact lamp for $300.

American Pickers, Storage Wars, etc. Even Flip That House... fake.

Yes, they may do this for a living, yes they resell these items, but there is very little reality to any of these shows.

Why? It is because film production is extremely expensive. They are not going to waste money filming dead end after dead end paying these "reality" actors and crew.

Shag, why is your post listed 5 times? Was it intentional?

Possibly to get the point across that these shows might be fake?

Shag obviously feels very strongly about the subject...LOL

My question is how do you KNOW they are FAKE FAKE FAKE!

I have only seen Storage Wars a couple of times and to me it was very obvious that the animosity between the men was staged but what about the rest?? I was totally bored by the show.

I haven't seen any of the other shows so can't comment on them.

I enjoy watching American Pickers. I realize we only see snippets of life on the road as a picker, and from what I've seen, there's no way you could support a business with what they pick up on the show.
I guess I watch it because I really enjoy the characters. I can relate to them. They seem enthusiastic about what they do.

I shall have to check and see if we get American Pickers on any of our channels here in British Columbia.

I am addicted to the Home Hunters and Home Hunters Internation, Selling New York and other Real Estate shows.

Also, at the urging of my daughter have started to record Hoarders and Hoarding-Buried Alive shows...WOW!

otteropp: I can relate, the DVR keeps me glued to the TV. Pickers and Pawn Stars are on the History Channel along with other fascinating (being sarcastic) shows like Ice Road tuckers, Swamp People, etc.

I have 2 storage units and I can promise you if I were to lose them - the buyer would make their money back plus a great profit.
I love all the shows including Pawn Star, American Pickers and Auction Hunters. Do I think it's all real - not really.
I saw the guys from Auction Hunters on the Nate show and they said that they lose money on something like 60% of all the units they buy. They only show the ones that are good.

Just the logistics of production tells you that things are staged - how does the camera operate from the viewpoint of the item in a barn being "discovered" if the camera man isn't there already?

While it's a given that all of these shows are "reality style", rather than reality, Storage Wars is the most amusing because it is so bad. Maybe it looks worse because on our cable they run these marathon style one-episode after another, but they do need a new fake script writer. My favorite is the guy who is "looking for collectibles". In one episode all his lines consisted of:
"I'm looking for collectibles."
"I sure hope I see some collectibles."
"I wonder if there are any collectibles."
"Boy, that could be a collectible."

and on, and on. It stands out because I don't think I ever hear anyone (other than the Home Shopping channel use the word "collectibles" in daily life, and he never utters a sentence without it.

I also store business material in a storage facility. I see the household material people store - I suspect they give up the unit when they finally face the fact that they have spent 1000.00 to store 500.00 worth of stuff. And if they know they are going to lose the unit, they pick off anything worthwhile before they get locked out - that's why you see units with just boxes of baby clothes and old textbooks.

I get it on the internet. History Channel. I like the internet version because there are only 30 second commercials.

Me too Merrie - Swamp People and Ice Rd Truckers are the best. I liked the Alaska one where they had small planes and flew supplies all over the state. Guess they are off until the Fall.

max40: 30 sec commercials are too long for me. I DVR everything and FF through ALL commercials!!

Storage Wars always seemed strange since no matter where they were, whatever the city, state, etc. Same people. Same auctioneer.
