the G. Dubya conspiracy!
Just kidding. The last thing I'd ever start is a thread on politics.
But seriously, I want to talk about garlic. They say it has health benefits and you can even buy those garlic pills.
What do they claim the benefits are?
I've got to say, I've been eating a clove of garlic or two a day with a meal (I just chew it quickly) for the last few days and just today I noticed I feel a little bit of pep. Something I don't have a lot of normally, so I'm sure I notice a bit of difference.
The only downside I can see is that I won't be getting a visit from Vampirella.
Is this all in my head?

Or unwanted relatives....or wanted relatives.
Hell, nobody will be visiting you for that matter....Whew!

All you garlic lovers would love going to the Gilroy Garlic Festival then. It's a once a year event held about 30 miles south of San Jose, CA. They sold garlic everything, including garlic ice cream. My favorite was always the garlic mushrooms....yum yum.
Nice place to spend the day. Crafters selling their items, tons of food...mostly flavored with garlic, bands playing songs on the grass and the smell of garlic was all around.
My inlaws have always taken garlic pills and have tried to get my husband and I to do the same. But sorry loosecannon, I can't recall what they stated the benefits were.

There's a restaurant in L.A. that I really want to go to: the Stinky Rose. Everything on their menu is supposed to have garlic in it. Now, if I just knew someone who loves garlic as much as I do & is willing to give it a try...

Garlic sandwiches! Sliced raw garlic on buttered sour dough bread. I love those, almost as much as heated garlic bread made with a loaf of sourdough, sliced, with minced garlic and butter spread between the slices and placed in the oven for twenty minutes or so.
I have a garlic cookbook, "Garlic Cookery" by Martha Rose Shulman. The history section states garlic "cleanses the intestinal flora of harmful organisms, it is a natural vermifuge and expectorant, and it contains antiseptic and antibiotic properties". "In 1941 it was proved to lower blood pressure, and further research has shown that it dilates the blood vessels and reduces fatty deposits." "It has also been shown to increase the body's ability to absorb B vitamins and to be effective in controlling blood sugar and cholesterol levels."
It also says that heat destroys the agent that causes the strong odor, and heat also reduces the medicinal benefits.

I think I like garlic on and in anything except cereal...if a little garlic is good, a lot of garlic is better!! My cat loves garlic too, after I have had it he gets in my face and has dibs on my "exhale"! Funny kitty!!

Hello and welcome bobbin - Thanks for jogging my memory. That's why my mother-in-law takes it. Her doctor told her the same thing. (it dilates the blood vessels and reduces fatty deposits). She has CAD and believes it has helped.
edited because besides not usually being able to spell, now I can't type.

Wow, the Gilroy festival brings back memories....
I went a couple of weeks ago. I heard it would be a dissapointment. The first time after having been here for 10 years now. It was pretty dumb EXCEPT for the food. Really BAD Cover bands!
The Garlic Ice-Cream made the whole trip worthwhile though!

How do you like it there, lindak? Compared to San Jose?
Roasted garlic is SOOO good. Just wrap up that whole flower in foil, pop in the oven or on the barbie (for my aussie friends) and wait for it to get all mushy. Then squeeze the cloves and voila! Mix with butter for yummy garlic bread spread or use as a paste for other cooking needs.

Femme, I agree!
My husband travels to a certain Asian country alot and there he eats raw garlic...as is custom with their cooking. He absolutely reeks when he comes home. It takes days for it to get out of his system and for his breath not to smell like the city dump.

Linda K, perhaps that is why my blood pressure is up sometimes and not other times. I eat a lot of garlic for a while and then forget about it for a couple of weeks.
I've heard also that eating fresh parsley helps to get rid of the garlic breath odor, and that is why it is often a served as a garnish.
I never made it to the Gilroy festival when I lived in California. I would like to taste some of that garlic ice cream!

So much for working... now I am just thinking about food! Thanks Loosecannon.
:0)
Baby red potatoes slathered in garlic butter! (Ever watch the Simpsons and see Homer Simpson think about food and drool?)
And garlic bread of course.
Okay, see you all later-- I am going to the kitchen! Thanks for the inspiration!
I'll have to pass on the ice cream though-- I am a chocolate ice cream kind of girl myself!
