I hope someone can give me advice--I'm taking a trip to Germany (Duesseldorf), and I want to be able to take my laptop and access the internet while I'm gone. I know AOL has international numbers, but I don't know how easy it is to access over there. (BTW I do have foreign phone adapters.)

I'd also like to know if I will have to upgrade to 6.0 (I currently have 4.0 on my laptop). I've heard horror stories about 6.0 blocking other ISPs, and I don't want to screw up my regular home internet access. If anyone has other suggestions for being connected over there with my laptop, I'd appreciate the advice!

Thanks in advance for your always-excellect help!

No, you don't have to "upgrade" to 6.0. I still use 4.0 on my home PC and it works just fine. After AOL 5.0 trashed the dial-up networking on another computer of mine, I vowed never to install it again, and I don't want to touch 6.0 either. In fact, the next computer I get is going have have a cable modem and I'm not going to let AOL anywhere near it!

Does your regular home ISP provide dial-up service? (Most do, unless you have high-speed acces.) If it does, you can probably set it up on your laptop, too, and avoid AOL altogether.

Rainy Bear - I've been encountering problems with my dial up network since I upgraded to 6.0. I didn't realize that was what caused it. Does re-installing the dial up network help?

Eyeguy - it was a long time ago when that happened to me, but I recall that reinstalling the dial-up networking was the remedy for that problem (it was well-documented on AOL's user-based help boards at that time). I honestly don't remember whether it worked or not, or if I even tried it. That computer may have been close enough to the end of its life that I didn't bother with it.

Now AOL freezes my computer every time I close it, saying it's trying to "remove art files" and clear room on my hard drive. I'm really starting to think it's the spawn of the devil.

Rainy Bear I thought that terminology was reserved for "Republicans" not AOL.?!?!

Rainy,
Thanks for letting me know I can keep 4.0. I wish I could use my normal ISP in Europe, but it only has US number.
