Yesterday, a couple of minutes after the 2nd WTC building was hit, my 75 year-old friend was in a full plane taxi-ing from the boarding area. The plane stopped, engines were shut down, and passengers were told to evacuate. All over the tarmac, dozens of planes were either stopped or taxi-ing back to the gates. No one could take any of their carry-ons. No overheads were opened. The plane was emptied very quickly. Passengers were "herded" (not being negative here- but that's the only word to describe it) through the terminal and turned out to the streets. Of course, outside the terminal, hundreds (perhaps thousands) of people all heard the news and were terribly glad they were not in the air.
