For any of you who don't think our freedoms are now at stake due to this attack, see the link below.
These terrorists have now caused us to lose our privacy !
For those of you who are NRA Second Amendment enthusiasts, when one of these terrorists opens up with a gun in a crowded Mall or some event, our second Amendment will go next.

I've always believed that this would come; just not quite so soon or drastically. These are now very dangerous times because people may be persuaded to accept almost anything. Big Brother.

Each hit we take from these terrorists will shrink our freedoms yet more.
After the passing of this bill, the bastards have not only killed thousands and destroyed property, they are destroying our Constitution, the very fabric of our nation.

I predict in time you will be required to show a need and get a permit to own a general purpose computer.

As of earlier today you have almost no legal rights if the government deems you to be a member of a communist group or of any group “whose object or purpose is to overthrow the Government of the United States.” By declaring a national state of emergency the government has the right to detain you without trial for as long as the state of emergency exists.
Read the Communist Control Act of 1954 for the details.

Actually we have been in a declared state of emergency for years.
Roosevelt declared one in 1933
Truman declared one in 1950
Nixon declared one in 1970 and 1971
Clinton declared one in 1996
Congress tried to bring the earlier emergencies to an end in 1976 but left a loophole that they would end in 2 years UNLESS the president acted to keep them in effect. So every year every president has done so.
Most of our constitutional rights are ended by the state of emergency but they have kept any public outcry from happeneing by not chosing to exercise most of the provisions they could. One document I found said the folloeing:
These proclamations give force to 470 provisions of Federal law. These hundreds of statutes delegate to the President extraordinary powers, ordinarily exercised by Congress, which affect the lives of American citizens in a host of all-encompassing manners. This vast range of powers, taken together, confer enough authority to rule this country without reference to normal constitutional processes.
Under the powers delegated by these statutes, the President may: seize property; organize and control the means of production; seize commodities; assign military forces abroad; institute martial law; seize and control all transportation and communication; regulate the operation of private enterprise; restrict travel
How long before they start opening our mail?

I am really surprised that there has not been more comment on this thread. I can see beside the online side of things that the face recognition software that was tried out at the last super bowl would be an ideal tool for anti-terrorist work.
It would not surprise me to see all the airports and federal buildings wired for that technology in about a year.

Gravid...
LOL! If what you say about the ongoing state of emergency is true...you spoiled the thread with some unpleasant facts, and ruined all the drama...

I seem to kill a lot of threads but it worries me because I can't tell if people are not commenting after me because they felt I made a good comment or because I am such an insufferable ass there is no point in making a reply.

Thanks toke - that's encouraging. I like you too but I especially like it that you make points with a lot shorter post than I seem able to do. I guess that's why I am writing a book.

I had rather assumed that posters weren't ready to pursue the potential for restricted freedoms yet. And, of course, the more immediate concern is exactly what we are and will be doing about the terrorists and the outcomes. Whatever happens will result from the will of the people or lack thereof.
