For years I've loved to garden. Two years ago I was in an accident and was too sore that summer to keep up with the garden. The next summer I still let it go to weed. This fall I decided something had to be done. I whacked out some overgrown shrubs and hired a friend who is a landscape designer to come up with a plan for some walkways. She presented her plan on the first week of September. We considered which parts of it we wanted to undertake this fall. After the eleventh of September I wondered if I was a fool to even consider something as frivolous as landscaping, but we proceeded. Today part 1 of the plan is finished and I'm pretty excited about it. It included a stone wall and walkway from an arbor to my carport.

What have you forged ahead with? Where have you travelled since September 11?

Good job.Really looks nice. I can picture some nice shrubs and flowers trailing down the walkway.
Tomorrow I plan on going to the mall and doing my bit for the economy.
I want a pair of red shoes. I have never owned a pair of red shoes. When I was a child and asked for them my mother refused, too racey she thought.
I'm not leaving this planet red shoeless!

That's the attitude, tegan. I believe we only go around once so we'd better make the best of it. I can't live in fear the rest of my life just because we live in the DC 'burbs. I don't want to look back when I'm 70 and say "I wish I had done so and so".

I've been gloating in secrecy about this for a bit: Two weeks ago I purchased 2001 Toyota Solara SE 2-Door Coupe.

Ex-MrJulesy's reaction: "That's not really a suitable car for driving around with kids."

My reaction: "So?"

She's a beauty!

High-five's to all of you!!!

Looks great, SS!! Great way to take your mind off of things. Can't wait to see the pics of the finished project.

I had a new, more energy efficient refrigerator on my to-buy list, but it was not something I "needed" right now. My other one was over 20 years old.

However, I went ahead and bought one a week after the tragedy. Having no patience for shopping, it was my way of doing something not only for the economy, but those who rely on commissions for their livlihood. My salesman was a grad student working his way through school.

No picture. It's black, side-by-side, filtered water, ice cubes and crushed ice in the door. Can't get over how much brighter it is inside. Now, I can "see" the green food.

SaabSister:
That looks absolutely amazing! What a beautiful place to spend time! I hope you make lotsa happy memories there
My part in helping the economy?
Mark and I found our dream home, we're closing on the 9th!
(hopefully we'll tie the knot before then!)
Did you know we have a drive-thru wedding chapel right here in South Florida?
Now if we could only find Elvis to perform the ceremony.....

As for travel...

We drove to NC 9/15 for a long weekend.

My husband went to NY the first week of Oct. for Salmon fishing.

No plans in the near future that would require flying. If I did, however, I would go.

A friend of mine has been touring France the last 2 weeks. The plans were made prior to 9/11, and, although there were a number of cancellations, he refused to cancel.

What he did do, though, is stay away from the news for several days before leaving.

Zoomin,

There are very few things in life as exciting as buying your first home.

Congratulations!!!

I've recently added the new wheels and tires, as well as the rear spoiler and the mini "bra" on the hood, and I just installed entirely new tail lights the other day.

I may end up dying a horrible death of anthrax, but at least I'll be driving a cool car while I'm coughing....

The opinions expressed above are for comparison purposes only. Your mileage may vary....

Is anybody else here jealous? I certainly am saabsister. What a wonderful job you've done! I just love your place

Way to go julesy and zoomin!! You guys deserve it!

Now Femme.....how can you possibly afford the food to go in that new fridge when you're still paying for that new car????

Wow! A new car and a new refrigerator. When I moved into this house twenty years ago, it had a refrigerator from the 60s. About five years ago when we replaced it, I had to buy another small refrigerator to fit the space. I'll be glad when we remodel the kitchen and I can get real appliances.

zoomin

Good luck with the house. (Surely if Elvis is alive, he'd be glad to perform the ceremony. He's been spotted enough times. He's got to be around.)

godzillatemple

I'm jealous. The Saab's mileage is approaching 100,000 and it could stand to be detailed, but that's throwing money away because I live about 3/4 of a mile from the paved road. By the time I drive back from the carwash, the car is dusty.

The garden designer stopped by this morning to see the finished product. I made her mark out the spots for my violas, daylilies, and creepimg Jenny and then I planted them as soon as she left. Just being able to see a positive change has energized me.

If I'm ever looking for another beater to jaunt around town in, I may consider one, otherwise, I'll just stick with the Durango, Saline, and Harley.

That looks great saabsister! I have tons of landscaping fantasies but no time to make them come true.

I bought new carpet for my guest room and office three weeks ago. It used to be "vintage 70's" burnt carrot orange, now it's kitty-litter grey... because my office is where our upstairs cat box is.

RainyBear. My sister had orange shag carpet in her first apartment and I had orange countertops in a place where I once lived. Neutral grey is nice. Kitty litter grey is even better. (I'd need hairball orange here since I live with the king of hairballs - the obsessive orange tabby.)

KD,

You mean there is supposed to be more in my refrigerator than my husband's beer?

Pocono,

I bet it was you who bought Jay Leno's Harley on eBay, wasn't it?

That is a really nice job on that walkway. I've been reading books on how to do a stone walkway and will be doing one next spring I hope.

I have been after my husband to let me do my kitchen. On the 12th I ordered the cabinets, granite countertops, double oven (woohoo!!!) and stovetop. They should begin working on it this coming Wednesday. I am so excited because it has taken 2 years to get to this point.

tsunamii, I can't wait to start working on the kitchen. Good luck with your project. You'll have real appliances too - I'm jealous.

I had a landscape crew do the walls and walk and I'm glad that I did. My husband and I laid the other garden walls years ago and they haven't held up as well - shifted over the years. We didn't take the time to dig a good foundation.

We are definitely pumping money into the economy (big time) but it doesn't feel one little bit exciting. I did decide to do it this fall as opposed to waiting, new roof shingles,(at least I'll have a lighter roof color) replacing a couple of windows and some siding, new gutters (with leaf guards-no more cleaning) and downspouts.

In the spring (yup I'm planning on being around then) a deck, replace sliding glass doors in the kitchen eating area and paint the house.

We have lived here since 1978 so it's no surprise the work needs to be done, but the prices ARE startling!

edited to ask Saabsister:What type of stone was used for the walkways and are they set in stone dust? They look wonderful and easy to walk on...we are going to *something* to connect our multiple garden *islands* in the back yard ~ very little grass mostly flowers!

I went on a trip to Wal-Mart. Bought $500 worth of groceries.

Next on the list is to fill the barn with hay and refill my 55 gallon container of kerosene.

I will also be investing in a couple of gallons of paint.

jt, you reminded me - I've got to get my 5 gallon emergency supply of kerosene for the winter in case the power goes out in a snow storm.

zilvy, the pavers are concrete(Belgard) and the wall Pennsylvania field stone. I had to visit several sites that had the pavers because I've never been crazy about concrete pavers but I'm tired of resetting flagstone. Yes, they're set in stone dust. I'm excited by this project because it wasn't a necessity. I've replaced the well, drainfield, roof, furnace, most windows, several appliances, and floors in the twenty years I've lived here.

Those pavers look great and I would never have guessed they were concrete. I know what you mean about flagston, just doesn't work out that well. Stone dust for setting brick or pavers is the way to go. Really, really like the look...need a good stable surface that has a natural look. I am going to show this to DH and see what he thinks.
It must be nice to do something *just because* instead *we have to* happiness is a garden path and new gardens!

My contribution to the economy:

1 New Fridge
1 New Dishwasher
7 (yes really 7) new storm doors for the house

All paid in cash.

I'd do more, but I am pretty broke for a while now/

Let's see...

New floors in the bathrooms.
New countertops in the bathrooms and the kitchen.
We're going to refinish the basement and create me a little crafting room.
The vacation will have to wait until January when we both have breaks in our schedules - most likely Costa Rica or the Galapagos for 10 days.

I've been doing little bits of shopping here and there in the meantime, mostly clothes.
