I found this in a Reader's Digest article this month. I'm a sugar junkie, but not a big chocolate lover - but I know there are those of you at the RT who LOVE your chocolate. Here's the good news.....
"Chocolate. Dare we label this sweet treat a health food? University of California, Davis, nutrition researcher Carl Keen says chocolate isn't only an indulgence. "We're looking at chocolate because cacao beans are extremely rich in flavonoids, the same antioxidant compounds found in red wine and tea," he says. Keen and Penn State researcher Penny Kris-Etherton have both done studies hinting that those flavonoids offer heart benefits. But Kris-Etherton warns that chocolate isn't a superfood. "It has fat. It has calories," she says. Yet chocolate contributes little to the total saturated fat most folks scarf -- one percent or so. And by eating dark instead of milk chocolate, you'll cut down on the bad fat."
