Very sad. They live about 3 blocks from us and my wife knows them--I didn't. They were out of town just for the day, and when they got home they didn't have a house anymore.

I didn't realize a house could burn for that long. It was discovered about 11:30 AM, but by the time the volunteer firefighters arrived half of the house was almost fully engulfed, and they were still trying to put out the fire by 4:30 PM. The high winds did not help a bit. The house was fully gutted and partially collapsed.

At least the owners weren't in the house. But if they would have been there, it may not have happened the way it did, because they might have quickly got it under control.

A house fire is one of my fears. I check our two smoke alarms every week.

Hi Loosey - it's me, Dusa...

Sorry about your friend's house...

My neighbors (downstairs from me - 2flat) leave burning candles in the window (long narrow candle sticks which could easily topple) when they go out, they've got cats that could knock them over. This worries me...

Hmmm - something screwy with this edit...weird characters...

I'm OK, You're OK!

We just endeavor to persevere.

We're still in business, so I guess OK.

Chicken soup for you. It does help, trust me.

Oh, I know - it's the best. Wish I had some. I should've remembered when I dazed my way through the grocery store today. Oh well. Just ordered Italian Beef for dinner...

Good to see you...

You must be hearing the Led Zeppelin cd I'm playing on the computer. Physical Graffiti album. One of the greatest rock 'n roll records ever.

It's really awful to have your house burn. You lose so many things that can't be replaced.

I live in an older neighborhood where the houses are turn-of-the century and most have beautiful woodwork and architectural features. People buy them and spend the rest of their life working on them. LOL

Anyway, the fellow a few doors down decides to strip his woodwork and started on it using a chemical stripper. It was hard work and went slower than he liked so he decided to try a heat gun - great idea, huh? He no sooner turned that thing on then POOF, the entire room was in flames. He ran to the kitchen to call 911 and just in that short time, two other rooms caught fire.

Fortunately, he was the only one home and he got out OK. The house was a wreck; it took a year to rebuild and repair. His wife told me the worst part of it all was losing photographs and old linens that her grandmother had given her.

Personally, I would have wanted to wring the guy's neck.

We just endeavor to persevere.

Wow. LC, I just read that line less than an hour ago ... checking out Paul Kamanski's website ... that's amazing ...

It's good to see you, btw ... sorry to hear about the fire ... housefires are one of my own personal fears, too ... when I was about 12 I lost a friend to a housefire .. they lived upstairs over their business (a supper club - does anybody else remember 'supper clubs'?) ... Jim was afraid to jump from the second story window - his dad went to get a ladder .. when he came back, the floor had already collapsed ... I've never forgotten it, so I tend to run two circuits through the house at night, making sure everything is shut down ...

rachelcrisscross, eh? Kinda makes me feel bad that I'm still just 'kazoo' ..

:lol

Hi Kazoo!

I'm sorry about your friend.

"Endeavor to persevere".

Wish I could claim that line but I remember it from the movie "Little Big Man". The old Indian Chief who was Dustin Hoffman's adopted grandfather said that in the movie, and it stuck with me.

.... a gift for ya ...

"They took us to see the Secretary of the Interior. 'you boys sure look civilized', they said. They gave us medals for looking so civilized. We told them our land was stolen. 'Endeavor to persevere',they said. They stood us in a line and took our pictures. The papers said, "Indian's vow to endeavor to persevere". We thought about it for a long time... When we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the union."............Lone Wati (played by Chief Dan George)

Yes, that's it! Chief Dan George. Where in the world did you come up with that? Chief Dan George was such a loveable old man. I say "was", but I'm only assuming he's gone by now. He was old in the movie and it was made over 30 years ago.

You ever notice that the Native American actors and actresses tend to be great actors? At least I think so.

I agree ... I could get all political on ya and say it's from a couple hundred years of having to 'act' ... self-defense, or something, I suppose .. but I do agree .. part of it is the expressiveness in the face, too, I think ..

I found the quote at Paul Kamanski's website ... a musician whose name I remember from San Diego .. was surprised to see two references to the same quote within such a short time span ...
