If they saw an asteroid coming at the earth the only thing the politicians would want to know is how close to the next election will it strike?
Guess who goes down the hidey holes and plays Dr. Strangelove? The party in power.
It WOULD solve all the problems with the third world. Wipe all the people out - then the surviving industrial powers will recolonizee the land. All the resources would still be there except perhaps directly at a strike site.
