The story out today is that the Anthrax that was mailed out last year is really better as a weapon than any program has been able to create in the US or any foreign program they are aware of.

Now consider. Why would someone mail out such a small number of these letters and then stop?
Usually someone who does such a terrorist act takes credit or makes demands.

I can only thing of two possibilities.

One- It was a test and we will see more later with a much larger number of mailings and possibly other methods of delivery designed to overwhelm the health care system.

Or Two- There were demands made of government and they either met the demands or they have refused and we will have to suffer the consequences of that refusal.

I read it as a person or persona that is not interested in an ego trip or trying to have a media reaction. They are cool calculating people - utterlly ruthless and quite dangerous.

If they made demands I hope they were meet because whoever did this looks like they are smarter than the collective abilities of all the government researchers put together. If they think they can ignore such a person or disrespect them thinking they can string them along until they make a mistake and are caught we may all pay the price.

"I read it as a person or persona that is not interested in an ego trip or trying to have a media reaction. They are cool calculating people - utterlly ruthless and quite dangerous."

Even the reclusive Unabomber sought the media's attention. (You know who I wonder about? That suspected Olympic Park and family-clinic bomber, Eric Rudolph. That guy disappeared into thin air, with thousands of people looking for him. Not that I think he has anything to do with the anthrax issue, but I'm not aware of him seeking media attention for his alleged acts.)
I *do* think the anthrax mailer is a homegrown criminal -- I'm just not certain he's the lone-nut variety. In my more suspicious, cynical moments, I can convince myself he's on the government payroll. (CIA, for example.)

Hadn't considered the "secretly brokered deal" angle. Now you've got me wondering what all we pay for that we never even know about...

Funny I was wondering the same thing yesterday. The last reports I recall were that the anthrax was weapons grade and probably made in the U.S. Question: if the anthrax came from one of our own government installations, would the government tell us? They probably caught the party responsible though we'll never hear about it.

When it first happened I wondered if it was a wistleblower action. That is I wondered if it was someone that would show the world that the stuff did exist and then step forward to tell everyone that their own government had stockpiled a zillion tons of the crud in violation of law and treaty. But if that was what happened as you say they never survived to do the second unmasking part.

There is also a doctor in Florida that treated one of the plane hi-jackers for a skin lesion on his leg several weeks before 9-11.

Now the doctor says that the skin lesion was more than likely a lesion caused by anthrax.

The people directly behind it may have died on 9-11, or they stopped because they were afraid of being caught, or they want to wait awhile before they do it again for the terror effect. They might also have been deported or are in custody.

If the anthrax did originate in from an American strain, it could have have been procured by a foreign graduate student. We have Chinese nationals in the NRC and our most sensitive nuclear labs, an Arab terrorist in a bio program isn't out of the question.

I believe our government knows who it is. But, I still wonder about all the scientists that disappeared. That sure got hushed very quickly.

It may have been just one more scare tactic the government used to rally public support for the war on terrorism. Keep people scared as hell and screaming for vengence..

It smacks of a CIA scheme. The stuff was mailed by U.S. gov operatives, but the info about the U.S. source of it was released through independent means. The government then had to stop and cover it's tracks to be sure it would not be traced back to them. It's similar to the unclaimed profits from last minute investments in airline stock. The bet that the stock would crash paid, but the investors didn't claim their winnings because they hadn't expected the move to be discovered so quickly.

Read in today's NY Post that the outer-coating was made of an "unidentifiable" substance (!!!) or do I not know how to read anymore.

This is another not good thing.

About the only thing so complex it would not be redily identifiable would be something like a protein.

I figured it was probably anti-cling laundry spray.

>>I figured it was probably anti-cling laundry spray<<

That would explain it. That's like talking Tarot to a physicist.

What was that book?

On how to dress:

"Am I a boy or a girl?"

"Am I hot or am I cold?"
