....and my first thought is whether or not there are nuclear power plants there. The government plan to transport all of the nuclear waste material in the country by rail or truck depend on this not happening and they are assurung everyone that the transport is 'perfectly safe' ---unless a
trainload derrails. They're still trying to count the dead.......

Less than five days later than the Florida accident, a mile-long freight train and a commuter train, # 809, collided south of Los Angeles, buckling and derailing a passenger train, injuring 265 people and killing 3.. The northbound freight train hit the southbound Metrolink train at 8:10 a.m. today, April 23.

This should serve as a warning to the danger of transporting nuclear waste by train. It's risky enough just to live near these plants.

The top map shows the number of Active Nuclear Power plants per state.
Illinois is the state with the most Nuclear Power facilities with 13 licensed to operate and a new one coming on line. The 8-million+ populations of Chicago and the surrounding smaller cities are at great risk.
The second area at great risk is the Pennsylvania/New York area. (Remember the infamous Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant accident near Harrisburg, PA, which endangered the lives of over 650,000 people in only a 20-mile radius?)

Call and write your Congressmen and Senators. Transporting this deadly material across the country is irresponsible and it should not happen!

If they would take the rails from under the trains they wouldnt derrail any more.

Helen--where did you get that map? I've been looking for such a map. How can I print that?!!!!!!

We had another earthquake in NY the other day. They, whoever they are, say that the Indian Point nuclear power plant which already has its problems is built on a major fault. I think it's the second quake we've had since 9-11. It was upstate--a 5.1.

The Florida train derailed about 30 miles away from my home. This was a passenger train, so there is no chance it would be transporting nuclear waste....but krs's point is very well-taken. The NTSB hasn't declared an official cause for the derailment, but their early take is that it was caused by a misalignment of the rails, which were actually supposed to be maintained by CSX Transportation (which has already paid more than $250,000 in fines over the past five years for failure to maintain tracks.)

I surely don't want nuclear waste barrelling down these tracks!

Helenjw's map is from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, by the way.

If you are concerned about the reactor sites remember these are just power plants.
There are also research reactors, reactors for creating weapons materials, reactors for universities, and reactors (some of the safest) aboard naval vessels in port or potentially anywhere along a coast. There may also be orbital reactors and there is a possibility of reactors about black program aircraft.
There are also projects such as fusion reactors that will have the potential of creating large amounts of radioactive waste.
