Did you see on the news where a Middle-Eastern woman was allowed to wear her face and head covering for her Driver's License Picture?
Doesn't that make the ID useless to police?
I mean, think about it. She could buy 1 license and let all her sisters use it, too.

If her religion doesn't permit her to show her face to strangers, how will she be able to drive?
From the article...
WINTER PARK -- A 34-year-old woman is suing the state for suspending her Florida drivers license after she refused to have her photo taken without an Islamic veil.
Sultaana Freeman, a former evangelist preacher who converted to Islam about five years ago and wears the traditional niqab, says her religion doesn't allow her to show her face to strangers.
She filed suit earlier this month asking an Orange County judge to review her case.
"I don't show my face to strangers or unrelated males," Freeman said in an interview Tuesday at the office of her American Civil Liberties Union attorney. Only her emerald-green eyes and mascara showed through her veil.

I think that before the September 11 terrorism, she had a license and was permitted to have her picture taken showing only her eyes. After 9/11 and the increased security, the state of Florida refused to issue the license without a full face photo.
As long as her vision is not restricted by the veil, I don't see any reason to insist on a full face photo.
Maybe if she only rejects strange male photographers, she can be photographed by a female friend.

A few weeks back, when I went to my appt. at The Cuckoo's Nest I noticed the Photo ID area was there. I needed a new one. I had a cute vintage beaver hat on and, well, my hair looked awful anyway. The guy kept insisting nicely for me to take my hat off. I wasn't going there with the flimsy shred of vanity I have left. "It's my religon", I exclaimed, hoping to use The Orthodox Jew defense. It worked.
So now I have a nice new ID in which I look like a total weirdo but nobody, but nobody, will find me in a photo with Roots dogdanged it! In general I'm not a liar, I just COULD NOT allow myself to be photographed that way.
If time allows in the next few days I'll explain why I look like a crackhead in my now expired Florida license.

You might not see a reason Helen, but obviously Florida does. Each state make their own requirement as to their drivers licenses. I suppose that the lady can go to a state that doesn't require a full face photo, or she can do without a drivers license. Think of the Islamic countries that don't allow women to drive at all, whther they have a sack over their head or not.
The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. Anybody could wear a paper bag over their head for their drivers license photo and claim it was their "religious practice".

LOL, KatyD!
If I try that in my state, I'll receive a full police excort to the nearest loonie bin. I agree it's pretty ridiculous.

IN those countries that do not allow women to drive, could it be that they require full-face photos? I mean, if women CAN drive with a full-face photo ID AND a woman is also not allowed to show her full-face due to her religous beliefs, might that not explain the reason for women not being allowed to drive?

If I claim my religeous belief does not allow me to wear pants how long do you think I will stay free?
The city of Minneapolis does not allow a person to cover their face on city property, and yes they have arrested muslim women who refused to unveil or leave way before 9/11.
Also no ski masks or rubber halloween thingies.

Just an interesting side note: Several years ago our elementary school "outlawed" masks during Halloween celebrations during the school day.

LoL Gravid!!!
The veils, the turbins, the outfits.... seems like religion is always something to fall back on to explain stupid behavior. Our country is so open to religious freedom that it forgets about logic. "Real" religion, let's say the 10 commandments, which makes perfect sense, is just a passing blur. It's all been replaced by this hypocrital pseudo crap....actually so much so, I don't think the word religion means anything anymore.
Gravid, you should write a book about how many things people get away with, based on "religion". Maybe get Woody Allan to help you.

I like to think of the dividing line between "good" religion and "bad" religion as being defined by common sense. Does the religion ask you to donate all of your worldly possessions and riches to their ministry, where they promise to send it all to starving children of the world, but instead use the money to pay for 24k gold water faucets? Does the religious beliefs ask you to sacrifice something of yourself, meaning fatally? Does that religion require to break laws of common sense; not referring to archaic laws that reflect prior "moral" attitudes? Does the religion require you to become celibate to get closer to that God or god? Is the inhalation of massive amounts of hallucinogens required for you to worship?
You see, if the religion does not ask you to harm yourself or others, then it's okie-dokie with me! The ones that ask you to sustain damage to yourself or to others is crap.

Driving is a privilege not a right. She has a choice; either don't have your photo taken properly and don't get a license or do it right and you can have your license.

not to betaken lightly I have printed a line of paper bags which may be used at the motor vehicle office or a bar at 2am
