I know Jimmy Breslin- if you were having drinks with him he would tell you what he really thinks in somewhat stronger language. The truth is that the race is just one small source of indifferent gloating from the Saudis- they directly or indirectly own many businesses and properties in the U.S.!

First the writer complains that the prince is taking big purses - but I doubt that money is the motive. He has probably spent far more than the purse raising and training a whole stable of horses to get one to win. His personal travel expenses probably run more than the purse. Likely it is the love of the sport and the society surrounding it.

I agree with the prince - if he is not a politician why bother him? He probably has as much control over what his government does as I do over what the US does. In fact if he spoke out against any of their policies he would probably be treated much worse than I would for doing the same - with the same result - zero. Likely he wants to run his poneys and doesn't give a damn what the politicos do.

Should I stay home and never travel abroad or show my face if the US government ever treats some group badly? To someone in Africa or Asia that makes $200 a year I probably look like so much money they think I can call George B up and chat with him.

If I go to cycle race in France do I want to have some Frenchman come up and ask me what I am doing to make Pres. Bush do this or that?
It is silly. I have no control and no blame.

It is this same unthinking hatred that is sweeping Europe again where anyone with a dark skin and accent is an agent of another government and culture when most of them just want to work and care for their families just like us.

You make some good points, gravid. The reality, however, is that the Saudis are responsible for much of the funding and training of many of the world's terrorists. As this is no secret to most Americans, it is rather brazen to participate in some of the biggest U.S. sporting events-money aside. It is NOT a question of his being a politician, but rather a question of whether his business interests are known. You are surprisingly quick to defend someone whose true "identity" is unknown to you. The Saudi got maybe a little flack. So what?

I just suspected that the reporter didn't know anymore about the Saudi's business interests to attack him than I did to defend him.

While I may not agree in total with Brez's opinion, the irony of the situation with the firefighters at the winners circle is tough to swallow. The Saudis leaving the sport would cost the US horse racing industry plenty.

Couple this with the money Saudi's donate to suicide bombers and the whole thing begins to stink even more.

>>I know Jimmy Breslin- if you were having drinks with him<<

There was a time I would've LOVED to drink with Breslin. Now I would tell him, in stronger language, to go to hell. You can tell him for me, from "the black composition notebook" gal who emailed him a while back.

Yeah Stusi, Because I think Breslin sucks means I want to drink with the Prince of Saudi Arabia. You are so insightful you could make a fortune reading cards!

nycyn- It doesn't mean any such thing. I simply asked you a hypothetical question which once again was not recognized as such. Would you kindly answer the question?

Sure. Why the hell not? I'd take a drink with nearly anybody smart and interesting, once. Beats getting it from TV. I reckon he doesn't hang and kick back with women tho'.

nycyn- We part company there. I would not have a drink with a Saudi/Iraqi/Afghani etc. without knowing his political(possible terrorist) affiliations.
