If I get what he is trying to say he believes that the fear of death is an untruth the government uses to control people. I wonder why dead people smell so bad after 3 or 4 days if it is not real? Poor fellow really needed some more education if this is as well as he could express himself.

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/05/03/pipebomb.letter/index.html

I wonder if he will only imagine he is locked up?

Did you see him on the news as they took him away? He had this big smile on his face.
One sick puppy. Do not think he will be smiling much when he gets to meet the bad boys in the big house.

This guy is a terrorist like all the rest. Killing or endangering innocent people to make some political statement is terrorism. He should be fried.

Stusi, It's obvious that this fellow is seriously disturbed mentally and I am sure that he will be evaluated by a psychiatrist.
Your suggestion that he should be "fried" is barbaric.

helen- would you consider my suggestion barbaric if it is found that he is competent? Maybe he has strong political convictions and he thinks this is the best way to state them. It doesn't make him insane! Sound like another recent discussion?

Stusi

Now, you are suggesting "if" and "maybe" and presuming to know just what he was thinking. The conclusions that you jump to are mind boggling, in my opinion.

"If" it is found that he is competent.........

"Maybe" he has strong political convictions.........

Then you tell us how he thinks............

Finally, you are ready to fry him.......

Next, I guess you will presume to know what I think.

Well anyways he did get his fifteen minutes of fame and maybe that is what he was after in the first place. Now he is going to prison for the rest of his life. Having a baby face like he does, his fellow prisoners are going to have a good time with him. He won't be smiling for long, he will be crying for his mommy.

Helen- You jumped to the conclusion that he is "seriously disturbed mentally". You are getting boring with your hypocritical and semantic-based criticisms of my opinions. Don't you have any original thoughts?

We have an individual who has been described by his family, friends and classmates as normal. Suddenly, that individual starts stuffing mailboxes all across the country with bombs. It's not a major leap to think that this is a fellow with a mental problem.

It is, however a leap of major proportions to jump to the conclusion that he is sane and should be "FRIED.".

I sincerely hope, that if this is what you consider an original thought that I never have one.

gravid, now its your turn to be a bit dense. What he is saying is that the government is manipulating people's fear of death/dying in order to control their actions and that part of the evidence for this is consumerism. He's angry that the government would actually promote the fear of death we all instinctivly feel, because he feels that there is nothing to fear in dying.

Gee - I thought that's what I said. Maybe I didn't say it very well. Do you get any clear idea why he thinks it is not to be feared? I took this to be literal - "There is no such thing as death. The people I've dismissed from this reality are not at all dead." Does he mean the ones he (had hoped to) blow up as dismissed from this reality?

I know a lot of people SAY they don't fear death but really very few seem to want to be suicide bombers etc. It will be interesting to see if he turns out to be hyper-religeous.

Very strange and confusing.

"Helen- What Borillar(your defender) said."

stusi, I have no idea what quarrel it is that you have with Helen, but don't try dragging me into it. And if that doesn't trickle down into your brain synapses and make some connections, then nothing will.

gravid, it groks to me that he means Death in the tradtional sense; i.e. your immortal soul going to a destination determined by some sort of judgement based upon your actions (or failure to act) when alive.

His stated belief is that people do not die a Death in the conventional, Western sense of the notion, but go onto some different plane of existance and it is nothing to be feared. Since only the physical body dies a death and the Real You continues in some other format, that which is You is not really dead at all.

Manson used a remotely similar defense at his trial.

He is obviously quite seriously disturbed. Considering his age and no previous symptoms, he is likely suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. I doubt it will save him from prison. He knew what he was doing and knew that it was "wrong."

So?

I supported her position because I felt it was right, not because SHE needed defending.

Take a Chill Pill, stusi.

stusi-I think the death penalty is a bit extreme in this case however I can guarantee if this young man announced he was a republican this group would fight to get in line to flip the switch.
I am not a republican but know that the round table has two legs shorter than the rest. so be careful, any plumber will tell you what rolls down hill.

Borillar- NO that is NOT what you did! You questioned me for getting on Helen and not twinsoft after you had a little run in with twinsoft. It was NOT an issue related defense. Fess up!
Let's all get back to issue related chats.

Well he is at an age where this sort of delusional behavior is often first displayed.

I will be happy if they just keep him away from everyone he might hurt. I know frying guarentees that but it really is not needed if they keep him locked up. Sad to say you can't trust 'em to do that...

Paranoid Schizophrenia. (Shaking head.) If the kid is paranoid, based on what we *know* so far, it's from all the pot he's been smoking. What do you carry in your wallet, one of those pocket guides to psychiatric diagnoses? "Diagnose your friends with this handy..."

They just said on the world news tonight (sorry I don't have a link to my source of information) that his motive was to place the bombs in a huge smiley face formation on a map of the USA.

Indeed. Consumerism is not a value (well, didn't used to be) but that's what kids seem to be getting brainwashed most about.

Oh how I wish I could raise my kid in a place where he could be out in the street all day long playing stickball, stoopball, ring-a-lario.

When I was a kid, we were lucky if we had a Spalding and a shoe heel. Skates and a bike for the more ambitious amongst us. We'd get through entire summers with these and without A/C too! We never even knew what each others parents did or didn't do; we didn't care. It was very different theater.

Nobody shot up schoolmates, etc., and parents could put a TV on without worrying about Lulu grabbing Johnnie's crotch wearing a thong at prime time.

This "wonderful country" is a sick country. Almost every time I travel abroad I become embarrassed to be an American upon my return.

Shoot me.
