Might the selling of the cows to buy jewelry be considered an insult?

What a generous gesture. Before they decide how to handle the cows, I hope that they will be in touch with the Masai tribe to find out what they believe is the appropriate way to handle the gift. I'll bet the fellow from Stanford would be a big help with this decision.

I saw that on TV last night and almost cried. What a wonderful thing to do. I think they should build a park where the twin towers stood and put the cows in there.

Sell the cows?? I'm agree with those who said if they'd wanted us to have the jewelry they'd have given that....rather than the cows.
Whatever we do...I hope we don't insult their gift.

What a gesture, especially since the value to them is equal to giving a child.

I hope thousands/millions see that link and email their personal thank yous.

Such refreshing news. Thanks Borillar.

That is the true meaning of compassion, what the masai did. They gave what was most dear to them, that keeps them and their children alive. Humbling, it is, to read about it, and know that even today, someone(s) in a remote part of the world still has compassion for humans regardless of their political or religious persuasions. They did it because they felt it was the right thing to do. If we all could take a lesson from what they did, we all might wise up.

"The cows are the most amazing gift we received –- I mean, who else sent cows?" insisted Ed McCormick, a construction worker from the Bronx. "If those guys wanted us to have jewelry, they would have sent it. They wanted us to have cows. We should take the cows and raise them on a nice farm upstate and then send the cow puppies back to them someday."

That article actually put tears in my eyes.

The above quote from an ordinary construction worker is as profound as any decision by Solomon. It would indeed be the right, respectful thing for them to do, regardless of the cost. America needs as many friends as she can get and we dare not refuse such a sacrifice on the part of the Masai. Returning the gift with calves would complete the circle and seal the friendship forever.

This is really real?

Heck, I'd take the cows. Fer chrissake I'm sure the Saudi prince could run them over on his jet with his horses.

I want the cows. This is taxation without representation.

I like Borillar's suggestion tool

I found this inf about the tribe.

The life of the traditional Masai revolves entirely around their cattle. They believe God entrusted his cattle to them; consequently, their wealth is measured by the number of cattle they have acquired.

Because of their religious reverance for the cattle, I don't believe that they would be impressed by the jewlery deal.

They drink the milk and occasionally mix the milk with cows blood. This blood is acquired by using an arrow and then patching the stabbed area so that it will heal again. I could not find any information to indicate that they use the cattle for food in the form of meat.

Your suggestion, Borillar, is wonderful.

I didn't realize returning a gift after being given a gift is done, until our son married a Japanese girl. They too give a gift to those who have given them one. Our D-I-L said it us usually 10% of the gift given. I thought that was a wonderful gesture.

Still don't see this in any of the NY on-line rags. Probably because we'd go Wild in the Streets (which I think is just a matter of time anyway.)

Bush needs to invite the Masai cheif to the Whitehouse, and have the cattle grazing on the Whitehouse lawn.

It would also be a great gesture to keep the cattle here in the US and send the calves (cow puppies) back to the Masai. The Washington DC National Zoo might be a suitable home for them and everyone could see them there - complete with a sign telling the story of the Masai and their gift.

Tha Masai life a somewhat precarious existence in a very arid land, and yes cattle are a very valuable commodity to them. Cattle are the difference between life and death for them.

Eating a cow is a very special event and not often done. They live mainly on the blood and milk from the cattle.

It does bring you down to earth when some of the poorest people on the face of the earth give something which is so valuable to them.

I also find it a fine gesture for us to take the cattle after we told the shiek of araby to keep his millions.

I like the idea of putting the cows in a pasture (maybe build one enclosed with a fence) where WTC stood and breed them, then send the "puppies" back to the Masai tenfold. It would enrich them with more cows than what they gave, and it would also bind us closer to them who gave all they had in the spirit of compassion. If not the WTC area, then the zoo like Reamond suggested. I hope the New Yorkers demand the cows and not the jewelry. We can send a damn tanker to fetch the cows if need be. Just get them and take them where they were meant to go...NYC.

FL Disney has that cool (so to speak) Africa section. They could put them there in honor of the 9-11 victims.

Get me those cows, dogdang it!

The Masai cows were one of the topics on PBS's the MacGaughlin (sp?) Group tonight 6-7-02.

Seems there is agreement that the cows should be brought to the US. People have begun writing and calling the State Dept and their Congress reps. in support of bringing the cows to the US.
