Just listening to Attny. Gen Ashcroft. Seems we are going to require more individuals from additional countries to be registered.

Some of the highlights:

1) required finger prints and photos

2) registrations for those staying for more than 30 days. Requiring if they are still here after 30 days they need to prove they are living where they said they were and are doing what they said they were here for in the first place.

3) Criteria used will continue to be updated

4) The NCIC will do the tracking.

So far, using this program on people from say...Iran [and other countries] are showing 67 'hits' a week and those criminals have been arrested.

Ashcroft says that Europe is already using this system.

Will track the approx. 35 Million visitors to our country.

So....what do you think??

I think "It's about time".

I think its a good idea, but be ready for lawsuits. I just read in todays papers that 4 airlines are being sued. Im sure someone will find offense and scream "discrimination" if we try to seal and strengthen who comes in and who goes out.

It's a joke. I'm all for an across the board tightening of our boarders. While it is "nice" to start with the easy targets, namely those that have legally applied for entry, I'm waiting to hear Bush announce a tightening of our boarders between us and Mexico and Canada. Going after "legals" is easy, but trying to track and keep out law-breaking unauthorized persons from crossing our boarders to the north and south will be very difficult. Maybe we ought to do what the old Soviet Union would do with someone caught illegally in the counrty: arrest them for espionage and sentance them to hard suffering in Gulags - somewhere in northern Alaska, say, inside the Artic Circle. I think that would slow down the illegal boarder crossing to a trickle. In the meantime, Ashcroft isn't telling us how safe we are from terrorists entering Mexico illegally and then slipping across our board with the rest of the illegals. You know what I mean?

This will require aliens now in the US to register at INS offices, airports etc. I doubt that this will have any effect on terrorism. Illegal aliens are not going to register.

It's my understanding that this program is/has been in effect in our country for quite some time.

Ashcroft said the program was last updated in 1990....and is now being updated again to include Muslims and those from other middle-eastern countries.

National Security does need a lot of tightening up...but I think this is a good beginning.

Hep...I read that too. Will be interesting to see what happens. I believe if the airlines feel they don't have a strong case, they'll settle out of court early.

Well, I need some money. Guess I will wrap one of those dorky turbans around my head that women use instead of towels on wet hair you see in commercials, "stare" at the cockpit alot, forget my ID, mumble to myself, etc. That outta do it with them dumping me off the plane. Then I can sue. THey will settle out of court and BOOM! Money.

Do you really think it takes more than 30 days to commit a terrorist act?

My sister in law was raised in South Africa and they have this attitude that ANY young person is going to be trouble and politically active. It took months of troiuble to get in to visit her own parents.

When you go there you have to break your time into 4 hour blocks and if you are not where you said you will be doing what you intended to you are immediatly deported. They don't give a damn if your car broke down or your internal flight was canceled - completely unresonable.

Are they safer for that? Not a bit. It is simply a way to exercise their control freak natures and show who is boss. Big whoop. They can kiss my little pink behind before they will ever see a buck of my money as a tourist.

That is all it will ever do here is discourage tourism and alienate people. Real trerrorists can come in across our border without going through customs.

Not sure if you're addressing me...but if you are...I don't know why you'd ask me that question. They're not going to just be able to walk in and not be screened for/until 30 day limit is up.

Yes its about time. Austrailia has some pretty strict laws on entering. We had become way too lax on this for too long.

Another important part of this is that computer systems across the counry are supposed to be linked. It's hard to be on the lam for any length of time without tripping up.

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a
patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens
the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a
fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will
have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar." – Julius
Caesar

It's been awhile since I've read Caesar's Commentaries, but I can't recall that quote, KRS. I love reading about the Roman Empire or anything to do with their politics, as America in it's third century of existance so closely parallels Rome's in it's third century of empire building. I am not doubting the quote, but I would sincerely like to know the source of that quote so I can read the text in its entirety. Thanks.

Borillar requests a link.

I don't recall ever reading that either. A link would be nice.

Forget it. I picked it out months ago, and had it on my drive. You all are as able as I am at digging it out, so go to it and come back with more pertinent thoughts.

Of course we are! It's a lot more fun to ask you to do it though.

Makes you so cranky.

Now rawbunzel, that's clearly not how I meant to ask for the link from KRS! The quote by one of my favorite Roman Ceasars sounds like it's in the middle of an interesting conversation and I wanted to enjoy reading more of it.

At any rate, KRS, I'm sorry to hear that it's just a snippet. >SIGH!<

Aww. Well, I think it was a quote in the biography by Suetonius anyway, so you'd be unlikely to remember it from the accounts of war. One of his late insults of the people that preceded his assasination.
