I listed an auction yesterday using the buy it now feature with a cost of twice the opening bid amount. This morning I get a notice it sold. YAY!! PP sends their notice to the buyer and she responds [to me] that she'll send payment via PP next week.

Help me to understand why she just wouldn't make the opening bid and then just let it run...IF she wasn't planning on paying for it until then anyway.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

1) Impulse bidding

2) May not have been thinking straight if it was an impulsee bidding. Sometimes, I will do something and afterwards it hits me DUH I could have had a V8!

3) She may have thought she would snatch it up right away before others could bid it higher than your BIN amount.

Hi Linda,

I've had a lot of buyers who bid while
travelling (usually on business). They often prefer to pay after they get home.

Thanks for responding, Clarksville. I haven't sold since before the BIN feature was added. [I've been doing my share of buying though.] So..I thought I'd give the BIN feature a chance.

My thinking *was* if someone wanted to pay twice as much as the opening bid with the BIN feature, they wanted it right away. I did my homework [search closed auctions] and listed it with an opening bid price of what has been an average selling price.

Flawed thinking I'm learning. Maybe I need to consider adding to my TOS "if an item is purchased with via online payments...the auction be paid for" in say... 3 days. Does anyone do that?

STOCKTICKER!!! Hot damn!! How good it is to see you again. I've wondered how the sale of your house, the move and the relocation to your new home has been going. Share [please] whatever you feel comfortable sharing...give me all the news....I hope it's all you hoped it would be.

And thanks...I didn't think of that possibility. She did give a business name that she would be making payment through. So...that could be it.

Linda_K I don't do BIN, but if I did, I probably wouldn't do the 3 day thing unless I had a good reason.

Even so, you may still get buyers who want to pay after the 3 days anyways.

Linda, I'm moving in 2-1/2 weeks, to a different city about 800 miles away. Murphy's Law seems to be kicking in, but I keep reminding myself that it's small stuff in the grand scheme of things. I could have done without the news yesterday of a possible tax audit shortly coming my way though...

Could be she is right on the edge of broke and wanted another check in the account before she draws on it. Not everyone has a reserve. In fact it is downright scary how deep so many are in hock. Even those that "look" comfortable. Now I have been reading that there are millions of households that have not only run their credit as deep as the can but have taken the banks up on using the equity in their home so they don't really own any of it!

An audit...oh no...bad timing for sure. But from what I know about you, you have 'your ducks in a row' and the outcome will be fine. Just having to go through that at this time gains my sympathy. The only time [knock on wood] that we were ever audited was when I was executrix and trustee for my mothers estate. A simple explanation was all it took. Hope yours go as smoothly. But the timing.....urgh.

Only two and a half weeks??....just hang in there...I remember it well. Our buyers, the day before escrow was to close, made a demand that we do something or they'd back out. At that point we told them to go ahead....we'd had enough.

I somehow thought you'd already be in your new home. But soon....

The best is yet to be ... keep your positive attitude.

That could be gravid. But if that is the reason, I'd wonder why in the world they'd be spending more money rather than trying to get ahead or at least, break even.

But you may very well be right. My sister and B-I-L are starting the process to file for bankruptcy...for doing just the things you mentioned. It's sad.

My step sister is addicted to shopping. She feels that she HAS to buy gifts for people for everything but Christmas especially. If she sees Amish Quilts of fine quality for sale for $400 instead of $600 you or I would buy one - but she will buy six for presents. She admitted to me she spends $20k for Christmas and I know it is a lie. She spends more through the year. Her husband tried to retire and could not even after having a heart attack because she will not stop spending the money.

I know someone like that, gravid. She's buys in multiples...and generously gives them as gifts. She shops as a form entertainment. She has laughed that she's even brought something home and then realized that she already had bought the same thing before, and had forgotten she did. She spends so much that sometimes she can't pay the bills when they come due. Then she takes whatever she can back [returns it]...then starts the process again.

It's just another form of addiction. But...the good news is she now admits she has this problem...and is working to change.

I think they're trying to fill a void in their life. Something lacking for them to be at peace with themselves. Spending money and giving wonderful gifts somehow makes them feel better about their lives.

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Or even on you.
