I can barely go into my kitchen because the floor pattern is sooo bad. It's in great shape, but I've decided to get a new one. The sub-floor is in good shape, so I was thinking about another sheet linoleum. Problem is, I can't find what I want except in a peel-and-stick. Has anyone attempted this before or is it best to have a professional do it? Thanks!

kraftdinner,

Hey, that sounds like a great project. I need one too so I'll be reading this thread. My kitchen is small so it shouldn't be a big problem...famous last words..lol!

Hey everyone.....what about my floor? I can't believe you're more interested in schooling and Bush threads. Don't tell me I have to find all this stuff out on my own!?! What a letdown!!

Well Helen, I'll just have to see what I can do by myself, but I'll let you know how it goes.

You'd be better off paying a professional to have it installed, kraftdinner. If you DID want to go over your existing linoleum, you still need to prep the surface before laying the new tiles or linoleum. Also, you may have a bit of a problem with your "transitions" into the other rooms as the finished floor will be higher at the threshold, posing a tripping hazard. How big is your kitchen? You'd be surprised how inexpensive it is to have done, depending of course upon what flooring you end up choosing.

Oh Krafty! You know we care about your floor!

We just did our bathroom floor. It's a small room and didn't take a very large sheet of flooring so it was easy to do. I like it so much better than the stick on tiles! YUCK!
We did our back porch a few years ago and it is bigger than the bathroom but we messed it up a bit and had to get different edging to cover the error up.

You could do it yourself I think if the room is not too large. Accurate measurments are the important thing!

accurate measuring AND if you use the tiles rather than sheet flooring, start in the *middle* of the floor and work out to the walls.

Your floor is really important as you have to live with it for some time. Do not get the puffy linoleum because when you drop something on it it makes a hole. I can speak from experience. We did our bathroom with peal and stick and it was okay but I would never try a kitchen. Linoleum is not expensive so why not have someone do it for you and you sit back, relax and watch.

Hi kraftdinner now this is something I can relate to, kinda

We just had linoleum laid in our new house.
Its finally done, but it was pretty pricey, had someone come in and do it.

In the present house we are moving out of, we have a small kitchen, and used the peel and stick, and actually it turned out pretty good, but it may be different since it is a small kitchen

We wouldn't even try to attempt the new house, as the kitchen is huge. Its the biggest kitchen I've had ever.

I'm in heaven, and now we can finally move in, as that was the last thing to do to the new house

Thanks everyone! (I was just kidding when I implied your priorities were mixed up.)

Don't laugh, but I want to get black and white 'check' in 12" squares. I'd much rather have linoleum...there has to be some company out there that makes it. The kitchen is pretty small...that's why I can afford it!

I'd definately want the flooring removed, so I'll call and get prices tomorrow. I can't wait!!

No, they look great!!! I did that last year when I redid my kitchen. Though I did have someone lay it for me--used sheet flooring rather that individual tiles as there's no joints for dirt to get caught in.

This is funny! I have Navaho white walls and cupboards and white and black tiles in my kitchen and I want a black and white checked floor too!

Your kitchen sounds wonderful Near! Is it a new house or a renovation? Now that would be fun!! Thanks for telling me both sides...I think I'll pass on the peel & stick!

You did yours in black & white Bunni??? Bet it looks great!! It's something I've always wanted. Do you know who the maker is by any chance?

Rawbunzel!! That's amazing! Your kitchen sounds like just what I'm going for. You know, I told some friends what my ideas were about the black & white floor, and they all stared at me like I had no I.Q. Some people just don't have good taste I guess.

Are you going to eventually do it? I love the way that looks in a kitchen!

I'll do it if I don't move first. I'd like to move. But even if I do my ancient stove is coming along so I'd likely still do it. I decorate around my stove.

I can't imagine why your friends wouldn't like it....they will when they see it!

kraftdinner: sorry, don't remember the manufacturer--saw it at floor covering store and was thrilled.

Had my cabinets redone in white with black trim. Stove & fridge white, black microwave. Only touch of color is red knobs on cabinets.

Gee. Not only do many of us lean to the left, but we have black and white kitchen floors too. Mine's sheet vinyl - white tiles with black diamonds in each corner. I like the look - my cabinets are a saturated blue and turquoise and the appliances are white.

My only problem with the floor is that it shows dirt easily (probably a good reminder in the kitchen).

Wow, all you guys with the black and white check flooring! I love that look!

We did not get that, but I still love the black and white!

Kraftdinner, its not new, but renovated.
Probably the reason our flooring was kinda pricey (well pricey for us! because we went and got new furniture too for the living room) is the kitchen alone is 17'x 20' and thats ALL kitchen

The coolest thing, that I like is that we have solar back up heat (4 panels on the roof) and a solar water heater (back up also) But its on natural gas too... LOL! we don't get that much sun up here in the northwest

Great choice on the black and white!

Kraftdinner - How exciting!!! Anytime one can do something to make their home fit their own tastes is wonderful.

and saabsister - Gee. Not only do many of us lean to the left, but we have black and white kitchen floors too. Okay...you've convinced me....I'll never get a black and white floor. [three times rawbunzel ]

I've got a liberal black and white floor! LOL!
Black refrig, stove and diswasher.

And saabsister, I think my floor is trying to remind me of something.

LOL! This just gets funnier and funnier!
I have white appliances but my small electrics ~ the Kitchen Aid mixer and the Cuisinart and microwave ~ that sit out are black. I have added a bit of red for color. My tiles are the old white hexagonal with black edging and all the cupboards are white with black hinges and black glass knobs and pulls. Its been this way for fifteen years ever since I painted over the orange and yellow that the former resident had painted it.[Not to forget the wall of wood shingles he'd put in!]

Linda, What color do conservatives use in their kitchens? [three!]

hmmmm...a thought just occurred to me. I'm going to have to speak with our youngest son. He just remodeled his whole kitchen and put in black granite countertops....hmmmm..maybe he's a democrat too.

Just playing with you guys....black and white does look nice together...then with a splash of another bright color. Just couldn't resist.

Linda, I'm not and never have been a Democrat. I vote either way depending on who is running and what I think of them. I don't hold to any party line. I've always been a moderate.I lean a little either direction depending on the topic. Some topics make me lean a LOT Maybe your son just leans a little to the left but doesn't know it yet?! LOL

My kitchen can go anywhere, the colors mix with any other color. Yours has to stay home or it would get too busy.

I know what you mean, Rawbunzel. I feel that way everytime some one refers to me as a Republican. I too take the issues and form my opinions. [Don't choose a party.] And like you lean to the left...I tend to lean to the right. [...stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight....an old cheerleading song ]

It would be boring if we all leaned the same way.

Sometimes I lean to the right...like gun control issues. Like a willow I bend.I agree it would be boring if we all leaned the same way .....and I believe that has been proven right here in the RT!! LOL

RT has got to be the only place where a kitchen floor topic can be turned into a political discussion.

So.....what color is your living room?

So it can be concurred that kitchen floors can be bipartisan?

If your asking me...it's got eggshell colored walls, lots of lightly stained wood around the windows, door openings etc. Wooden slat blinds on the two windows. Hard wood floors stained with a light stain...almost all oak tables and an entry piece....entertainment center in oak..and the 'theme' is of the ocean [a love of ours]. So...soft blues, cremes, with just a hint/touch of dusty rose. Lots of things related to lighthouses and the ocean. Paintings are of the sea. Framed pictures taken by a friends son who's a photographer of different CA ocean landscapes.

whew...good

Your living room sounds beautiful Linda!
I love the ocean theme also, but hubby said I went overboard on the lighthouses and so they are in my office

rawbunzel, I love antiquey appliances! Maybe in the next and last house, which will be the retirement one (not a nursing home yet ) I would love to do all country antique everything, including the kitchen.
