He will be sentenced to 17 years as a result. Apparently his attorneys felt the government had a good case.

Doesn't matter how good it was. They would have charged him with another 67 violations and done anything they had to to put him away. Wouldn't have surprised me if he won to see him seized and taken to a military prison if they had to after a loss. The lawyers themselves were probably at risk or arrest. That's the newest line of attack to view the attorney as an accomplice.

actually If His lawyers represented him in a fashion the michigan state bar says is standard practice then they would not have bothered to show up for court once they sucked the money out of whomever was paying.
They would not have read anything to do with the case and the one time they showed up would haver talked to the judge tosee if there was any property in this divorce.

Here we go again: punishing mentally ill people. When will it all end?

They are now saying that the Bush administration coerced the plea because they did not want the circus of having U.S. intelligence officers revealed and an invitation for al-Qaeda to testify.

I find it interesting that Johnny Walker Lindh, a white guy is captured in Afghanistan, fighting with al-Qaeda and the Taliban. He gets lawyers and courts and pleas out. In 17 years, he is free.

The other guy(who we have forgotten about including me), a black man, is only suspected of maybe doing something unspecified. He gets nothing and may be be held in solitary for the rest of his life without a single charge being brought against him.

Gravid is right. They would have locked him up and thrown away the key. The gov't. didn't want anyone testifying regarding the treatment Walker received while in custody. That's part of the condition of the plea bargain. Walker can't talk about it at all. I doubt he'll even be interviewed by the media. The gov't. wants this one hushed up. We have met the enemy and he is us.

John Walker Lundh was, and always will be to me, a traitor to our country [in my eyes]. I felt he should have been tried for treason.

I'm sure there are many reasons the government made this deal, much of which we'll never know. But, IMO, it wasn't harsh enough.

And when his family went before the cameras and spoke of their support for what he'd done....I gagged. I would have understood the fact that they still loved him, no matter what he'd done, after all they are his family. But to say what they did sounded like they too support what he'd done.

Fact is when he went over the Taliban were recieving money from the US and all was well with them. It was not until they refused a deal for a pipeline through their country that the tables switched and as they were warned military action was taken against them. He had no more clue than anyone else that in a few short months the faction he joined would be fighting the US.

What kind of person however joins up with a bunch of pigs like the Taliban that want to take their country back to about 1300?

More than evil I will count him as incredibly stupid. But I count all people that way that allow religeous leaders to tell them what to think and do in the face of all common sense.

How can his mother reconcile his treating all the mothers of Afganistan like cattle?

Youare so right about that, gravid. What these idiot religious leaders never seem to be able to comprehend is that fact that the living scenarios conjured up by these so-called Holy books is outdated. When these systems to live were throught up, they were great advancements. Since then, we've had other thinkers that have taken it beyond the scope of these books. Our modern society is a prime example of that. This is why Fundies like Pat Robertson, Fallwell, the Taliban and any other group using ancient books as a blueprint for society are totally wrong. Humanity has tried religious governments of every conceiveable mix for two thousand years and it still ends up in disaster for the Many every time. Utopian system are good only as ideals and are not workable as functioning societies. What the Taliban have created are sick societies; they are sick not because they are wrong, but because they are ouotdated. Do we want tthat to happen here? So many Americans foolishly believe that we do. Pray that it nevr happens here in America - the Land to be Free of Religion!
