With the current states of the Democratic and Republican parties, can there really be such a thing as a conservative or "right wing" Democrat, or a liberal or "left wing" Republican? Should not the names of the two parties be changed to Liberal and Conservative as these labels somehow better seem to encompass the thinking of the majority of the members?

Nope, I think we need a third party that rightly reflects the views of those of us that are neither party and are more middle of the road. Both parties are too far out there for me anymore.

No. Personally I can think moderate or 'middle of the road', and sometimes what you may consider liberal.
I don't think its that black and white, cut and dry, whatever... conservatives and liberals. I see lots of Democrats being somewhat conservative, and visa versa

rawbunzel- My tongue-in-cheek proposal doesn't preclude a third party- perhaps the Middle Of the Road Electorate= M.O.R.E. I would probably join you there! Campaign slogan= We want MORE!

Three families were placed in frontier settler conditions of the late 1800s in I think Montana. It was a very enlightening show.
I think at least one family was ordered there by Homeland Security because they were illegal immigrants. It was a Republican conspiracy.

Reminds me of a Mexican farmer who was asked if he sided with the Federales or the rebels.
He said they are all men with guns and when they come through they all steal my chickens so what is the difference to me?

Reamond - A republican conspiracy? I think we watched that a while back. The three families left all modern conveniences and had to survive like they did in the 1800s.
One was a young man who during the show took a bride, another was a family of 5 [one was a cousin] and his family was having a huge home built in Malibu, CA. and then another family that I believe was from Tennessee. That was an interesting program.
And to stay on topic....as most can tell from my posts ...I'm pretty much am a conservative.

Stusi, I think that no matter how you want to work it out, there are always two distinct parties because they represent the interests of the two dominant classes: the Haves and the Have-Nots. The Republican Party is the party of the Haves and the Democrats are the party of the Have-Nots. What the Socialist Revolution did was to create a middle-class, a sort of Have-Some for the first time in history.. It is this Have-Some that has seldom been represented. Both parties have been trying for many years to tear down the Middle-class; especially the Republican party. With each administration, the Middle-class has been whittled away to near non-existence. You hear that the Rich keep getting richer and the Poor keep getting poorer? The problem that it relates to is the shrinking of the middle-class. If you want a third party, one that represents the moderate, middle-of-the-road, then you better make sure there's a *huge* middle-class.

I have long registered independent because I vote for people, not parties. I usually find myself in the uncomfortable position of being a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, ...can't buy anybody's entire line and so won't put my name to any of their parties...

Agreed - I'm not happy with any of them.
Probably never will agree with more than three people together at once about anything more important than where to go for lunch.

That's how most of us anymore, prof. There is a general decline in party-line voters. I think that's it's a response by voters to try to form a better government. For instance, voters in the last thirty years have tried a Democratic President with a Democratic Congress, a Republican President with a Republican Congress, a mix of President from one party and a Congress dominated by the other party. We've even tried third parties, but the existing two party system keeps making up all the rules and they make up all the rules that keep third parties from having a chance. We've tried to single out the creeps, lairs, thieves, crooks, and assorted criminals and vote them OUT, but the ones that come in often end up being just as bad if not worse. In the last Presidential election, this rouge Supreme Court voted against the United States Constitution to appoint our current president - we didn't even get to vote, as none of our votes cast counted at all once the Supreme Court overthrew the United States Constitution.
So, you can keep trying out your method of voting to improve government. Others will keep trying to get a third party in (that's mine), and almost all Americans will give up entirely. One more election like the last one, and not a single person will be left who desires to cast a vote.

I think that it's going to take moderates from both parties to leave their current political affiliation and form a new party without the old exteemeists from either party in order to get a viable third party together.

Borillar you keep talking about the last election. Get over it. It is done, finished, move on. If you don't like what happened be thankful that in a couple of years you can vote again.
Just be thankful we didn't get Gore for a President. If I voted democrat I would not have voted for him anyway and the reason being if he would have had any brains he would never have stuck by that president, that is one reason he was a loser. The other one is the people in Florida screwed up the election by not following the rules of voting. Move on!!!!!!!!!!!!
