And go to pieces on the stones

Afghanistan Ant

A young Russian lad lies on Afghan ground.
A Moslem ant circles his cheekmound.

Crawling is difficult, the dead too long unshaven,
the ant speaks softly, not the least bit craven:

You don't know exactly where from wounds you die.
You know one thing only__Iran is nearby.

Why with his gun is he like a scapelamb,
hearing for the first time the word Islam?

What will you give to our poor, barefoot motherland,
if you can't give your own people the things they demand?

Thinking is done not just where the HQ flag waves.
Those who march as slaves, get carted off to graves.

Is it possible there's not enough dead for you?
To add still more to twenty million, can't be true.

A young Russian lad lies on Afghan ground.
A Moslem ant crawls across his checkmound.

In order to be raised up, resurrected,
he wants to have Orthodox ants selected.

But in the northern motherland of orphans and widows
very few such ants remain in the meadows.
