Meanwhile, I inadvertently carried four knives through PDX security in my carry on bag, having forgotten them in the various pockets of the bag, and flew with them within easy reach. All four are more dangerous than a boxcutter.

You are lucky that you were not vigorously searched, detained indefinately and held in secret without a lawyer!!!
I just heard about a woman who was randomly searched at JFK. When several bottles of breast milk were found in the baby bag, she was forced to drink from each bottle to prove that the baby's milk was not some kind of volatile liquid.

They confiscated the scissors that I use for trimming my beard and mustache which have 1/4th inch blades and were inside a shaving kit inside a carry-on suitcase. They were very nice about it though.

What is really stupid is that any half way decent machinist could make a pistol with a brake open action like a shot gun or a revolver with a plastic body glass slugs with a teflon lined carbon fiber wrapped composite barrel and black powder so the explosive sniffing machines won't find it. I can make a pizoelectric igniter that will spark under the hammer fall with a piece of gold foil that only weighs a couple milligrams so it would never be detected. So its not a big high powered gun - 300 grains of pyrex going 1200 feet per second will still ruin your day. I find it hard to believe terrorists have not already figured all that out as easy as me.

That has to be the stupidist thing I've ever read. I thought the picture of airport security proudly displaying their gallon tubs of nail clippers was #1, but this outshines that.
It's too bad the gun didn't come with 'live sounds' like some of the toys do. Can you imagine the panic??

I used to do transports from Europe to the US and fly civilian back. I had a full set of resuscitation equipment in my carryon, and some rather large needles on the Bristojet syringes. The security personnel used to freak out when they saw the Xrays back then. I wonder what they would do now?

You forget, they are all homo sapens, (the same as you, and me) If I was A checker, and A 20 year old women, wagged her as at me, I would over look the plate she had in her ass??? It's all the same, if you look like a bad person, you will be treated like #*!@. If you can make someones heart stop, That person will blow up the "WHITE HOUSE". Its all what you see!~!

This is true - I took my buddy up to the state archives and he went to use the restroom so I went on in and he came in later by himself.
I am fat middle aged and smile a lot. I was also dressed very conservative.
He was young - flash hairdo - expensive designer glasses and has a scowl. Not to mention he wears these $300 pimp shoes, and silk shirts.
When he came in you could see they were worried and searched his brief case and took away his ink pen so he could not deface anything. They put someone to watch him but me they took right back in the security area you have to swipe card to go in and wanted to know what of their equipment I would like to borrow to help me.
