We have lost an awful lot of unvacinated horses in our area (Central Illinois) to West Nile and now it's showing up in dogs.
I'm just wondering if the same thing is happening in your area?

Calamity - Boy, sorry to hear that. We've only heard the national news about the people that have been sick or died, not any animals.
Nothing has been reported in our local newspaper about animal deaths here in north-central AR. We have a lot of horse stables around here too, along with a lot of cows.

Linda,
Haven't heard of csttle getting it here but if it is moving to dogs--kinda makes you wonder.
We have alot of people in our area who don't vacinate their horses and it's taking it's toll. There have been interveiws in local papers with just one Vet. who stated that she has seen 50 cases with horses and that's just what is taken to her.

I think it was NPR that said horses had come down with West Nile and I believe there were deaths. This was before the dog's death though.

West NIle has been around in the East for quite some time, and a danger to horses. An equine vaccine for it has been available for a couple of years at least.
While it hasn't been found in horses here on the west coast yet, I had my mule vaccinated for it immediately after I bought her a year and a half ago. I figured that since horses are taken all over the country to shows, races, etc. I didn't want to take any chances with Sweet Fanny Adams.
