Due to the success of Survivor,
West Virginia is planning "Survivor, West Virginia Style".

The contestants will start in Welch,
travel up through Beckley, Elkins, and up to Martinsburg.
They will then proceed back down through Davis to Fairmont, up to
Moundsville, and then back down through Parkersburg and Huntington to
Logan. Then they will make the final sprint to Charleston for the big
finish. For the entire trip, each contestant will be driving a pink
Volvo, with a bumper sticker that reads "I'm a gay, anti-union
environmentalist, and I'm here to confiscate your guns".

Anyone who makes it to Charleston wins.

Hi Twelvepole. I lived in West Virginia for 13 years. I seriously doubt that anyone will be making it to Charleston. LOL! Unfortunately, I knew a few people that would make sure they didn't get to Charleston.

That's sad to hear that so many people in West Virginia are so quick to kill innocent people; especially if they do not condone their ideas. It must be a very restrictivre society there, where freedom of thought and legal pursuit of happiness is only a story in the school books.

Borillar, first of all, do you, or have you ever, lived in West Virginia? Have you seen what happens when the UNION goes on strike? Have you seen what happens to the SCABS? I have. The gays are becoming a little more accepted there. I know a couple of them. And logging and coal mining are big issues with the environmentalists. But, if you aren't working in one of those type of industries, you are basically struggling to live there. And in West Virginia, EVERYBODY HAS A GUN. And everybody knows how to use them. And as far as driving around in a pink Volvo, West Virginians hate Yuppies. So if there ever was an episode for Survivor in West Virginia, they wouldn't get past the Union.

Oh, Borillar, maybe you need to find a book on West Virginia History and read it. You will find that it is all FACT and not FICTIONAL.

It's unfair to leave the impression that these attitudes can only be found in West Virginia. With your bumper sticker described above don't travel 50 miles outside New York City. That's where "the fog lifts, the sun burns through the clouds and the necks slowly sizzle to red".

Oh course, twelvepole! But it was to make a point, fiction or not. That point is that restrictive societies are more unpleasant to live in than liberal ones. Things like innovation, invention, arts, scientific discovery, the sciences are also restricted or are proscribed. Typically, these sorts of closed societies are swallowed up by their more cosmopolitian neighbors. That restrictive societies cause more misery and the downfall of the human spirit has been proved over and over again in history (NON-FICTION). No, you can't convince me that restrictive socieites are paradises for any but a very few.

Borillar this was a joke... I personally don't appreciate your left wing liberal comments, you post enough dribble on other threads, why not stay there?

Nothing you say will EVER make me change my mind about how I feel about things.

>Borillar, first of all, do you, or have you ever, lived in West Virginia?

NO. But my family hails from there many generations ago. We were farmers back then. We later became coal miners and mountain men fur trappers. We went out West with the early ones seeking gold and went over the Oregon Trail in droves. You see, I have a common American last name and our family has been nearly everywhere in America.

>Have you seen what happens when the UNION goes on strike? Have you seen what happens to the SCABS? I have.

Although I have not, our family is poor working class and are unionized and have fought and died during strikes. We're no push-overs in any event.

>The gays are becoming a little more accepted there. I know a couple of them. And logging and coal mining are big issues with the environmentalists. That sounds like Oregon before the 1980s. For Oregon, there was a stated policy "Oregon - Love It and Leave It!" by the Govenor himself since the 1960s. But in 1980 when the logging and mining industries took a hit, it was decided to open up Oregon to business, to diversify the economy and to raise exports in any way possible. Because of this policy, Oregon has gotten hit the least hard by the mismangement of the Republicans through the 1980s and early 90s. Today's severly damaged economy in Oregon is due to Republicans keep tricking voters to get into the state legislature where they've been doing the same things here for years that the GOP has only managed recently nationally.

However, for West Virginia, it will not and can not remain isolated and keep its culture intact for much longer. Once the land developers change the laws in your state that protects it right now, you'll be seeing farms turned into commercial real este and row houses and then rentals that all look the same for miles. They'll call that "Progress" and you'll have the local homosexual population suddenyl out in the open and killing them won't make them go back into hiding anymore. Even your best friends will turn out to be cross-dressers and open homosexuals (makes you think, doesn't it?) And then you'll get FOREIGNERS of all sorts there, from Asians to Africans, to Middle-Easterners to hordes of Mexicans. Nope, West Virgina won't be the restrictive little community much longer and I think, Good Riddance!

First of all, West Virginia hasn't changed for many years. And it probably won't. As far as them selling off land for land developers, I doubt it. West Virginia is a tourist state and has been for a very long time. The politicians there realize that is where the state's economy comes from. So why would they sell off the land when people come there to see the land? Yes, there is logging there, but they replant. And they do strip mine there, but they also replant. They don't sell it off to land developers. West Virginia is a beautiful state and the politicians and the citizens keep it that way.
And as far as your ancestors living there, YOU still haven't lived there.

And since you brought up the subject of FOREIGNERS. There are several foreigners that live in West Virginia. Where do you think the Mexican, Chinese, African, Italian, and many other nationalities come to visit. WEST "BY GOD" VIRGINIA!!!!!

Some do live there. It's the same as the rest of the United States. (Or most of it anyway.) There are several different cultures living in West Virginia. The Chinese restaurants are owned by Chinese people. The Mexican restaurants are owned by Mexican people. And some of the different cultures live off of the tourism there, as well as the natives (no pun intended). I will admit, it isn't a place for someone trying to get rich. West Virginia is a tourist and a retirement state. Yes, there are several "red necks" there. But I have met "red necks" in every state I have been in. And that is quite a lot of states.

And to think this all started out as a joke. If anyone should have taken offense to that joke, it should have been me. I thought the joke was rather funny myself. Because I realize how some of the people are that live there.

Just teasing...

Right! You really have to live there to know the people. I'm originally from Mississippi and I wouldn't try to tell anybody what it's like.

Last time I checked though, they had never seen a foreigner...except for the Greeks who own all of the restaurants. LOL!

Like West Virginia, everybody has a gun, usually within reach at all times.

Helen,
I realized you were joking. I laughed when I read it.

So, there are a bunch of Greeks that live in Mississippi. I live in Texas now, and there is a town here that is nothing but Czechs. They are the type of people that if you own a business and piss one of them off, you'll never have another Czech in your business.
