Man dies after crawling under train By PEGGY O'HARE Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

An unidentified man died today after he was cut almost in half by a Union Pacific train in the East End, authorities said.

The accident happened around 10:45 a.m. as the man tried to crawl under a train stopped on some tracks crossing Engelke near Navigation, Houston police said. As he was crawling, the train suddenly started moving backwards and severed him across the midsection, witnesses said.

The man was still breathing when paramedics arrived on scene, but was dead on arrival at Ben Taub Hospital. His name was not immediately released.

Julia and Gilbert Perez said they were sitting in their car, waiting for the train to clear the crossing when they saw the man sitting next to the tracks, eating his lunch. After the train stopped, the man got up and tried to crawl underneath one of the rail cars.

The man's torso was severed nearly in half by the rail car's wheels, they said. "You could see all his ribs," Julia Perez said.

One of the man's arms also was severed, said Houston Police Department Sgt. H.L. Ballard.

Just wait. If this man has any heirs, they'll soon be filing that big $$ lawsuit.

Good reason to support tort reform.

Yeah! Yeah!

EVERYBODY supports tort reform, until they get goobered by a drug-addled M.D.; or their Pinto blows-up on them; or their kid comes home with a lawn-dart in the head.....
