Kraftdinner, that is a generally accepted number, according to the Bushspeak in the article.

"We're really ramping up a medical response, getting them ready," said Chris Kozlow, of Innovative Emergency Management, a private risk management firm. "That's what would be going on right now."

Speak frikkin' English! I will support an official language amendment if it gets this crap doublespeak language out of our lives!!!!!

Well, they are from Lubbock.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Am I seriously worried? Bubonic is treatable, if diagnosed and dosed in time. Pneumonic is airborne, and that would be worrisome.

Left a sentence out.

"We're really ramping up a medical response, getting them ready," means that, "We're talking to the pharmaceutical companies to see if the American Taxpayer can fund giving everyone in America a vaccine against this possibility. We're also looking over the political value to see how much more hysteria that we can create and also, if the same gullible people who want to take the Smallpox vaccine would be willing to get a shot for this as well. In fact, we're looking at a whole range of unnessesary shots and mass hysterias to visit on Americans! Wheeee!"

Yeah, yeah, yeah. First [according to you] we are NEVER told anything by our government and media. Then when issues are brought to our attention....it's so they can create hysteria. Never, ever happy.
______________

Early this AM it was also reported on UPI that the Federal Reserve mail screening area received mail that had the anthrax virus on/in it. They're doing further tests and it was said that the first test sometimes shows a false positive.

Actually, as it was worded in the news last night, "they detected the possibility of anthrax" and are doing further tests.

WTF does that mean? The possibility pf anthrax? Either they found anthrax or they didn't. Which is it? Yes, I do believe the government over the past year has been preying public anxieties.

Snowy, if someone stole these virus's, would they have to have any special knowledge to keep the cultures alive?

Was that on the UPI site? Cause the way I read it I took it that the first test did show positive, but because many times when the follow up tests were done, the first test is proved incorrect. Who knows. We should hear shortly.

And bunni I'd appreciate hearing how you think they can ever win then? Or is that the point...that way they can never win. [be doing the right thing]. Should these issues be surpressed or should the government and the media make us aware? It has to be one or the other, doesn't it?

I was wondering what a private risk management firm had to do with this, so I googled it. Are governmental functions being given over to the private sector like the military support? What's happened to the Texas Division of Emergency Management?

I think this is the company mentioned in the story.

Kraft, if it's plague, they are bacteria, and the powers that be aren't saying if they were cultures or exactly what these vials are.

Whew. But why haven't they said anything about the possibility of anthrax in DC? Should have a few more results by now.

When I first saw that story this AM, my first thought was the money is contaminated.

LindaK: If you actually find something, then it should be reported, shouted from the highest tree, spread through the press, what have you.

But look at this:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Postal Service began testing for anthrax at one of its Washington facilities after the Federal Reserve said its own testing of mail had indicated the potential presence of the bacteria, a postal official said Tuesday

Potential presence? WTF does that mean? Why spread anxiety & even panic for the potential presence of anthrax? Do you see what I'm getting at? And the article goes on to say that they expect the test results Wednesday (today)--so why not wait until they know that anthrax *is* (or isn't) present? A quote in the article says: ""There's absolutely nothing that indicates we have a contamination problem here," Day said." So why are we even hearing about it?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve (news - web sites) on Tuesday reported a positive initial test for the deadly anthrax bacteria at the center that checks incoming mail for such threats, the U.S. Postal Service said.

There it is again, just slightly re-worded. Positive initial test? Initial? If it's positive, it's positive & needs no further testing. This re-wording still means the same thing: they haven't really found anything, but have no hesitation to tell everyone what they haven't found & thereby spread anxiety.

The way I've understood how this process works is, the initial test is done there [wherever]. If that initial test comes up positive, then it's sent to the CDC to be tested by them. If that also reports a positive..then it is. But that some of the samples that have been sent to the CDC have, upon testing, been shown not to be positive.

I do understand what you're say.

The same things goes, for me, with news reports like this one on the so-called missing vials. And I think in cases like this the press should also hold on for facts, and that the lab or company in question whould also make sure of their facts before spreading panic. This has happened a lot over the years. Scary reports quickly followed by "Oh. Sorry. We were wrong, there actually isn't anything missing. Ooops." Idiots.

From the Washington Times (AP) today:

But officials said Wednesday the bacteria wasn't missing after all. They alleged a Texas Tech professor had destroyed the vials before reporting their disappearance.

Dr. Thomas C. Butler was arrested Wednesday on a complaint of giving false information to the FBI. According to U.S. Attorney Dick Baker, Butler said Tuesday that vials containing bacteria obtained from tissue samples from East Africa were missing when "truth in fact, as he well knew, he had destroyed them prior to that.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Postal Service says no anthrax was found at a government mail facility that handled a Federal Reserve letter that tested positive in preliminary readings.

The Washington postal facility was closed for the day while samples from the site were tested. It was expected to reopen Thursday.

Two less things to be worried/concerned about. [ edited by Linda_K on Jan 16, 2003 10:55 AM ]

>I do understand what you're say.

Let me jump in here to help you understand it, Linda.

INITIAL TEST means that the QUALITY of the equiptment used in the initial test is nowhere near as good as the Super-Duper-Extra-Galatic-Atomic-Electro-Anthrax-Analyser over at the CDC. In fact, such cheap equpitment may get many false positives; such as, maybe the mailman had Rye bread or Sourdough bread in his sandwich for lunch and some of the specialized bacteria in making those flavorful doughs is only a single chromosone away from Antrax! The mailman ate his lunch, using his hands to hold the sandwich as he consumed it. This in turn left some micro-goodies on his hands and that was what came off onto the envelope to be detected by the low-quality detector.

Savvy?

Borillar - I understand what happens in this process, thank you anyway.

I was telling bunni that I understood what she was saying about having these reports come out and scare the public, when [she believes] there is no reason to do so.
