Iraq denies report about range of missiles

Experts say Iraqi missiles can fly farther than allowed by U.N. restrictions

UNITED NATIONS -- Experts have concluded that Iraq's al-Samoud 2 missiles can travel beyond the 93-mile limit allowed under U.N. resolutions, a capability that the United States calls a serious violation.

Iraq denied the report today, and members of the U.N. Security Council offered differing interpretations of the findings. Russia said they proved that U.N. inspectors are turning up good information about Iraq's weapons and should be allowed to continue working.

A team of missile experts met at U.N. headquarters on Monday and Tuesday to examine data on Iraq's al-Samoud 2 and al-Fatah systems. The missiles in some tests exceeded the maximum range allowed under Security Council resolutions in place since the 1991 Gulf War.

And as I posted in the smear Powell's honesty thread....

In other developments, chemical weapons experts headed into the Iraqi desert Wednesday to destroy a newly discovered batch of banned Iraqi weapons - 10 leftover artillery shells filled with burning, disabling mustard gas.

It won't matter what is found in Iraq. The pro-saddam supporters are never going to agree that we need to take action. Never.

As I mentioned in the Powell thread:

The only problem with this statement is that the missiles found were empty. No mustard gas.

As for the missiles that can exceed the 94 miles range limit...at most they can exceed it by 10 miles. Now, it's been a while since I studied geography, but I could swear that the US is more than 104 miles away from Iraq...

It also doesn't matter what isn't found in Iraq. The pro war folks will not stop for any reason. There have been no WOMD found.

When did mustard gas become a WOMD anyway? Up until 9-11 the only thing that was considered a WOMD was a nuclear bomb.

What some of you are failing to note is it isn't U.S. experts that are making this claim. It is U.N, experts.

Linda,

There was no "smear Powell's honesty thread." The thread, "Powell's evidence", was a discussion of the plagiarized intelligence dossier from which he cited information to justify war with Iraq.

UMMM, NO THAT IS NOT CORRECT. CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS HAVE ALL BEEN CONSIDERED WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW.

WELL BEFORE 9/11

We can handicap them like horses - if your missile has 10 miles too much range the UN super glues a 30 pound weight on it............

rawbunzel - NOBODY wants war. You know that. The only thing that matters here is that Saddam has been in continual breach of many of the UN resolutions. This was to be his last chance. He's in violation again.

Making all the excuses in the world doesn't matter. He's not disclosed what he was to disclose by the [I believe Nov. 2002] deadline that he was given. He's not been cooperating with the UN inspectors, according to Blix's last report to the security council, WOMD secret papers were found in one of his scientist's homes. etc. etc. He hasn't accounted for many of the items he was to...

He's in breach of many of the UN sanctions....not just 1441.

To me, we should have dealt with Saddam a year ago. No UN vote. All that's been accomplished is drawing this out longer. But we did go to the UN. And they voted 15-0 that he be given one last chance.

I don't know how you raised your children...but when I said 'one last chance' I meant it. He's played enough games. Time to take him out.

The thing that bothers me the most is I have yet to read [post] here why, those of you who are against going to war, don't seem to find any fault with Saddam. His NOT abiding by his agreement. No blame is put on his shoulders. HE could have cooperated, from the beginning with these inspections, in full, but he has chosen not to. You all appear to find one excuse after another for why his actions aren't at fault....only ours.

And it's by belief that if Clinton were in office, doing exactly the same thing Bush is, you'd be just fine with that.
