With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world, it is worth reflecting on the death of an important person which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at age 93.

The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in ... and then the trouble started.

This sparked a memory of something I'd read a while ago. Seems this song was actually the object of some controversy after LaPrise's death in 1996. I found a posting containing the story I read:

Hokey-pokey or okey-cokey?

Disagreements over the original song writer and copyrights.... well, that's typical....and ending when a majority of the group has become exhausted, hysterical or both.....that's how I remember it.

I do the Hokey Pokey frequently. Use in in preschool storytime. But were you aware that it started out as a dance for adults?

bunnicula Believe it or not, it was first made popular as a "b" side .... to The Bunny Hop! I found a story that made reference to that when I was looking for the story that I linked to.

bunni - But were you aware...yes..I use to join in with the adults who were dancing....usually after they'd had too much to drink. Funny to watch them trying to figure out which body part to put in or out.

preschool - Interesting. Bet it helps deal with all that energy those young one's have. Surprised to hear it's still a popular song and dance. That's great!

The kids love it. I make their parents do it, too...they are getting better at it

We also do "Paw Paw Patch."

miscognito: Actually, the song/dance gained popularity long before Ray Anthony recorded it in the 50s (though that is about the most popular version).

The guy who wrote it, did so back in the 30s, for skiers who needed something to do back at the lodges
