HAMBURG, Germany (Feb. 19) -- A Moroccan student was convicted Wednesday of more than 3,000 counts of accessory to murder in the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, ending the first trial of anyone connected with the suicide hijackings.
Mounir el Motassadeq, 28, was sentenced to the maximum 15 years in prison for helping the Hamburg-based al-Qaida terror cell that included lead hijacker Mohamed Atta and two other suicide pilots.
In addition to the 3,045 counts of accessory to murder, he was convicted of five counts of attempted murder and bodily injury.

Too short a sentence for me. Life would have been more appropriate for all the lives he help take.

Defense appeals verdict in German Sept. 11 trial.
BERLIN (February 20, 2003 5:49 p.m. EST) - The first person convicted in the Sept. 11 plot appealed the verdict, arguing the court did not hear testimony from another suspect in U.S. custody, his lawyers said Thursday.
Mounir el Motassadeq, 28, was found guilty Wednesday of belonging to a terrorist organization and 3,066 counts of accessory to murder for helping with rent, tuition and other payments that let members of the Hamburg-based al-Qaida cell keep up the appearance of being normal students.
El Motassadeq, a Moroccan, was sentenced to the maximum sentence allowed under German law - 15 years.
Lawyer Hans Leistritz said the main basis for his appeal, filed late Wednesday, was that the court was denied the opportunity to hear testimony from Ramzi Binalshibh, a Yemeni suspected of being the Hamburg cell's main contact person with the al-Qaida network.

Bill O'Reilly [Fox News] broke a story almost two years ago about a professor at a university in Florida that he believed was working either with or for the terrorists.
Even had the professor on his shows...and of course, the professor denied any wrong done. Bill stated [on that program] that he sure hope the CIA kept an eye on this guy...because something sure looked fishy to him about this university in Florida.
O'Reilly took a big deal of slamming and name calling for his views, and Fox News stood alone on being of the opinion that something was VERY wrong there.
Well...guess what? That professor was arrested and charged with being one of 8 terrorists. You may have already read/heard about this. Of course, he's still innocent until proven guilty, but Ashcroft appeared to feel he's got a strong case against him and the 8 others.

I should correct my statement....and say he's charged with aiding and abetting the terrorists but deciding how funds collected for 'the cause' were being spent. Not of being a terrorist himself.
