Feds, Airlines Plan Passenger Profiling

"Civil liberties groups are objecting to a government plan for a new system that would check background information and assign a threat level to everyone who buys a ticket for a commercial flight."

I agree with you, bones.

Nine to 11 of the 19 hijackers on Sept. 11 were flagged by the original CAPPS, but weren't searched because the system gave a pass to passengers who didn't check their bags, Hudson said.

I am blown away. I truly expected to come into this area and see people insensed that an airline would be running background and credit checks before allowing people to board. To find people saying wow, they should have done this years ago is disgusting to me.

You stand on soap boxes and scream that all terrorist must be killed to protect our freedom and way of life and then hand it over freely to United Airlines?

I'm sorry but my credit rating and bank info is no business whatsoever of any airline and the fact that someone can base my freedom to travel in this country (or lack thereof ) on my credit card activity is ridiculous.

But by all means hand every right to privacy you have on over to private industry and the government. I mean, afterall, we do have to protect the "American Way Of Life" right. That would be the right to be secretly investigated, denied travel priveledges, arrested and held without charges for up to a year...... that's what our forfathers wanted right?

What did you expect when the airports (and by extension, the airlines)were Federalized?
And who pushed for this?? THE DEMOCRATS !

http://www.ipsos-reid.com/media/dsp_displaypr_us.cfm?id_to_view=1346

I have a good friend whose son-in-law was killed in trying to stop the terrorists on the Pennsylvania airplane that made that big hole up there. He and a bunch of other human beings lost their lives. (I don't count the terrorists...they lost their claim to the human race.)

During the Civil War Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus because he thought he had to to preserve the Union. It was restored in 1866 after the War. We may have to put up with some temporary limitations to the rights we have come to expect. For most of us, these will involve a little loss of time in our lives in the way of a delay or inconvenience. But if it catches just one terrorist, it will save much time in the form of lives still to be lived.

We must have a little faith in our leadership that when this struggle is over, that our liberties (to whatever extent they have limited), will be restored to their full extent. If not, well, we will still have our guns and the citizenry can demand them to be. That is, if the Democrats don't take the guns away!

Besides the government already knows more about you than you do.....the terrorists are the only ones that should fear this.

Yes, because lord knows that once we have given the government an inch it's never taken a mile, it always gives that inch back.

I have more faith in the easter bunny than I do in our governments belief that we as citizens deserve any privacy.

::.the terrorists are the only ones that should fear this.::

Is that automated response #1 or #2 in the justification of piliging rights of privacy handbook?

neonmania,

The world has changed just a little since 9/11. Ask the people in NYC.

Of course! That's response #1. how silly of me to forget.

No bones "The World" has not changed. Our arrogant assumption that we were somehow above other nations and their problems howeve is. Terrorism is not new, it's not something we were unaware of, it's something that we have just finally opened our eyes to and acted in a typical American reaction - overreaction.

I don't understand this "please sir may I have another?" mentality. The big battlecry after 9-11 was that "they may take our buildings, they may have killed some of our citizens but they'll neer take our way of life."

"They" don't need to take anything, we are willingly giving it away.

Who said terrorism was "something new"? No, they've been blowing up our planes with bombs for years..... But it was taken to a new level. I'm sorry if you can't understand that.

There will be an election in 2004. If things are as bad as you predict, I will be
changing my voting patterns. Until then,
I feel obligated to my country to have faith in its leadership. I feel we owe that to all the men and women overseas.

I guess this is Automated Response #4.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, by the way, your Responses are just as predictable as mine, sorry.

Have to agree with Neomania on this one, profiling is BAD....

What this country needs to do is enforce our immigration and watch the borders... if they are getting on a plane it is too late, and if they are clever enough to pull off an attack, they most certainly will probably get through a profile check.

Profiling can lead to even worse things that affect our privacy and I hate the ACLU... so this hurts to be agreeing with that bunch losers.

What in the world does supporting our forces have to do this? Why is that always the arguement? Our military is completely irrelevent to this topic.

For your info,
1) I don't trust Bush any farther than I can throw him.

2) I despise the concept of this war, I think there are other more efficient and financially responsible ways to get rid of Saddam.

3) I whole heartedly support and respect our military.

I know people that boarded our carriers these past few months and headed off to support a cause that they disagree with but are doing it because that is the commitment they made. I think you might be surprised just how many of them do question these orders.

The Draft Riots of the 1860's, The internment of US Citizens of Japanese ancestry, Iran/Contra, Watergate, The Korean War, The Cold War, Bay of Pigs, Panama, Grenada, Kosavo, Enron.... I have to say I do not trust our leaders as to their intent or ability. The legislation which has been passed in the post 9/11 hysteria has heralded a new era of neo McCarthyism
