"It is a measure of the intellectual vertigo into which the United Nations has plunged "the international community" that America, which is going to war to enforce Resolution 1441, is said to be doing so "in defiance of the United Nations." The war will be followed by a presidential election in which all candidates must answer this: "Do you believe that any use of U.S. military power lacks legitimacy unless approved by France, Russia and China?" The Republican candidate has already answered."

Here's another from the Winnipeg Sun.
Forget about 'rush' concept at UN
By Linda Williamson
UNITED NATIONS -- Anyone who still believes the U.S. and its allies are "rushing to war" in Iraq should spend a few days here watching the fabled "international community" at work.
The word "rush" simply doesn't exist here, in any of the UN's six official languages.
Indeed, apart from the convoy of television news trucks outside this dazzling, Le Corbusier-designed world headquarters on the Hudson, there are few signs this is an institution on the brink of crisis and collapse.

I hope once things have settled down the Congress will address the UN issue. The way this whole issue has been handled is a shame. And the fact that it continues on is frustrating to me. I understand the 'why' of the current negotiations, but it's past time to stop this nonsense, imo.
Was surprised to read in your article the following, as I hadn't heard about it. Do they not see that each lapsed deadline makes their own actions less relevant? Do they not understand that each delay emboldens Saddam, who has already threatened to attack the U.S. troops now massing on Iraq's borders?

One of the changes they can make is to get rid of some security council members and replace them with others.
The largest democracy on the planet, India, should have a greater presense at the UN.
It should also change the policy statement and limit membership to democracies.
In this scenario, another body should emerge that includes all countries as a meeting place to PRIVATELY discuss world issues.
The United States and other industrialized countries will never give over authority or sovereignty to the UN when you have countries like China, North Korea, Libya, and others as members.

That would be the only way an organization like this would work at all.
The UN thinks it has power, it doesn't.
It's a Think Tank. Unfortunately most of the members are not deep thinkers.
It should also be in another country, Switzerland maybe.
We should not be the only country making all the monies (stated in other posts) off the UN.
