The bird is a starling. They are expert at making use of any hole they can find to nest in, and even lay eggs in other bird's nests so the surrogate parents raise their young for them.

I adore the snopes website (and its companion, the urban legends reference pages.) Any time I get an email, all I have to do is surf on over and check it out. It's always there. It's one of the few "donation-supported" websites I ever felt moved to donate to.
