and with the limited information in this article, what's your opinion on how she should be dealt with. Try her for terrorism or as her attorney suggests or somewhere in between?

These young people don't appear, to me, to think ahead about what their consequences may be *before* they do stupid things like this.

She needs to be made an example of & prosicuted to the max. She may have been upset at the forced seperation her boyfriend, but her prank just wasn't funny.

2 years probation,
1000 hours community service,
Psych evaluation and counseling.
Financial restitution to law enforcement and cruise line.

I think she should be tried and if convicted serve whatever punishment she gets... this "prank" involved over 2400 other people.

That is the problem with today's society... oh lets treat the children with respect and equalization when it comes to some things and then others "oh she is just a teen"

This double standard is causing harm to our children...

On the other hand let her parents punish her after having to reimburse all the other passengers their fares...

Unfortunately, what she did during this time in history, was not a good thing. She should not be tried as a "teen-ager" but as an adult.

The taliban American man who was captured. The family tried the old sub-story "but he's just a boy" well my response was that the servicemembers at the time of the Afgan attack, are boys (and girls), too.

Her age and sex should not be a factor.

Hi, Linda!

Just for clarification - she is not a teen. Her lawyer suggested she should be charged with "being a teenager", not as a teenager. The idiot in question is 20 years old.

One spoiled brat who needs to be taught a lesson. She interrupted many more plans than just her own. If I'd have been on that trip, a once-in-a-lifetime vacation and she ruined it for me.....? there'd be hell to pay. And a small claims lawsuit for the cost of my trip, vacation pay from work, clothes bought for the trip etc.

So far we have five jurors. If we get twelve then we can proceed to the deliberation room and reach an agreement?

edited to say six....sorry, valleygirl....didn't see you.

Give her the 10 years!
That will help her get used to being away from her boy friend!
Call it a (Trial) seperation.

They should have brought the boy friend along on the cruise and then everybody would be happy!!!

Obviously something is seriously wrong with this girl's thinking apparatus. The fact that she was not left at home is an indication that her parents knew that she was unable to function without supervision. She needs a complete mental evaluation.

If it is determined that she is a danger to herself or others, based on the mental evaluation, I would vote to lock her up in a mental facillity where she can be treated appropriately.

Otherwise, she needs some intensive behavior modification with emphasis on learning responsibility and consequences of wrong behavior. A sentence of a couple of years suspended with parole while either going to school or working full time might work.

By all means let us once again treat a criminal like a victim....

This is part of the problem Helen, we treat too many of these criminals like they themselves are victims, what about the 2400 others this person ruined a vacation for?

If she isn't made to pay then who should have to? The Cruise line? Why?

I'm with bear and twelvepole on this (I doubt that surprises any of you ).

There are consequences for actions, and she should be held responsible...

I thought that my sentence was appropriate based on the information that we have to work with. If she violates parole, she will go straight to jail. That sentence is based on the assumption that she has no previous convictions.

I'm sorry that I neglected to mention money. The cruise line's insurance should reimburse the passengers.. It's unreasonable to think that whatever she can pay will make a difference, when 2400 people are involved unless she is wealthy with personal assets. But I do think that she should be required to pay a percentage of her income during those two years as part of her rehabilitation.

I don't see anything positive about locking her up for ten years. That is costly and she will probably be released in a worse condition than she is now.

I think she should be sent to Africa to help aid the missionaries. A few years over there would change her thinking for life.

She displays no remorse.
We need a way to sentance people to expulsion from society without locking them up.
Banishment.
Perhaps by withdrawing the rights to make contracts and assume her majority?

She displays no remorse. That's another indicator of her mental or emotional illness.

Somebody mentioned that a long sentence would set an example. I think that by the time criminals are old enough to appreciate sentences that are being meted out for a particular offence it's too late to set an example.

Kids should learn growing up what is right and wrong and know that consequences will follow wrong actions. I'm sure that when you were 19 that you would not consider terrorizing a cruise ship because your parents taught you to have consideration for other people. You didn't learn that based on a court tv scenario. Besides the criminal element of this act, this girl failed to appreciate the fear and inconvenience that she was causing 2400 people! Then she displays no remorse. A Psychiatrist will have a diagnosis but all we need to know is that's just crazy.

gravid - do you actually think before you make these posts? In your last two contributions you have advocated nuking Mecca for no listed reason whatsoever and making sure that a 20 year olds parents are saddled with her forever and that she remains jobless since she will remain legally unable to sign employment contacts, NDAs and many other things required in business that pay aboce minimum wage.

At age 20 she is an adult. With information in the article. 1. I would have to assume she is normal. 2. She can not afford an attorney. 3. Her parents can't afford one or want hire one for her. 3. Max sentence is 10 years. 4. first time offender. 5. she has admitted to guilt of a federal crime.

In order for her to have a jury trial, she must plead innocent of the charges. I assume she did not make a plea of innocent.

So I would not be a juror, but a Federal Judge. My sentence would have to be one, that would fit the crime while giving a goal for her to reach, that would expunge the sentence after, say 8 years.

So I'm harsh. That doesn't mean I don't think. It just means I am so tired of crap like this I am willing to be draconian in stopping it.
Here is a girl that is obviously so spoiled, selfish and petty that she has never learned learned to fit in society at 20 years old. If she is treated harshly perhaps it will be such a public notice that another 20 year old will not do the same thing. If they wanted to throw her overboard half way back wouldn't bother me.

My wife had to run to the hospital yesterday for her mother who fell and cut her head open badly. While she was there she left her purse unguarded for a moment and somebody got in it and stole her valuables. You'd probably say it is just a property crime and shrug it off. It was not just a property crime. It attacked my wife by taking her cell phone and money right when she needed them to care for her mother. It was the equal of taking a man's horse in the old west when he needed it to survive on the open land. I went in the waiting rooms and called her phone with my phone. I did not find it but if I had the thief would have been hurt badly enough to be happy he was close to emergency. These sort of swine need to have some fear. Deep deep fear of what ordinary people will do if they are caught. Not some exasperated Tsk-Tsk from a disinterested judge who says naughty - naughty. Then probably give hours of community service. Who wants community service from such a #*!@ head?
When they sentance these sports stars to community service after they get caught driving drunk or smacking some girl around I always felt the judge was sentancing the community to suffer their presence. It certainly is no punishment worthy of the name.

Gravid, you were just responding to the popular sentiment here. Fred pointed out that we are all judges rather than jurors so although your ruling may raise a few eyebrows and disturb your peers - public opinion here will be on your side.

Seriously, I'm sorry to hear about your problems yesterday.

Gravid - are you aware that community service does not mean your are working with the community, only for them. Most of the time community service wonderful things such as highway clean up and grafitti removal. I know one woman that will spend one day a week for the next year washing city vehicles on a DWAI. In some area s it also can be served as kitchen duty at homeless shelters of wherehouse work at Salvation Army or Goodwill stores. As part of the community, you benefit from the work that is done and from having it done free of your tax dollars.

The 2000 hours that I had sugeested basically equates to 10 hours a week for two years. That's a memorable amount of time lost due to stupid behavior.

You proposed punishment is not harsh, its unrealstic and punished others for her crime as well. Unable to sign contracts they are unable to sign leases - Congratulaions - you have just created a whle new group of homeless. This is not 1700, youcan't banish people from society without incarceration without causing additional pressures on society.

I am very sorry about what happened to your wife. The hospital is the last place one expects to become crime victim.

Hi Linda

neon, my point was that there are attempts to get people to view the alleged criminal as a "child" when our servicemembers are the same age. I believe PVT Lynch is 20?
