On 20/20 tomorrow night there is a segment about turning sexually experienced women into surgical virgins.
In the world of extreme makeovers, this may be the ultimate plastic surgery — but it is inspired by fear and culture, rather than vanity. Women pay $2,500 to have their hymens restored, in the process restoring their eligibility for marriage. Lynn follows two patients as they prepare for the surgery in New York, and also travels to the Middle East to learn firsthand about honor killings, a practice that punishes non-virgins with death. It is a revealing and chilling story.
It's a shame that in this day and age women would be killed for not being virgins.

This, sadly, is nothing new. A former boyfriend of mine, who is a member of a particular religious sect, says he knows of women in his church who have had this surgery performed right here in the good ol' US of A.
There are even worse horrors being performed on women in third world countries ... rather than go into graphic detail here where people may not want to read it, I will post the link to the World Health Organization page on female "circumcision" and other horrific practices.
