Great deffender of rights to lynch the black people.
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/lott_thurmond021211.html
Quote
In 1948, Thurmond ran as a self-described "Dixiecrat" on a segregationist platform. In his campaign, Thurmond vowed that "all the laws of Washington and the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches …"

But don't wory there are great deffenders of 'civil right' like Trent Lott to fill his boots.
Lott "If the rest of the country followed our lead we wouldn't have had all these problems."

Reminds me of a bunch of Good'ol'boys, in a Steve Martin movie.
Protesting, some wearing sheets, in front of a 'black lovers' house
"Trash ! Scum! Get Back From Where Yu Cum!"

It's ging to take a long time for All Americans (like Bear1949 I'm guessing) to completely shake that mentality, and image.
Some of the same people that were so concerned as to want to 'Liberate' the people of Iraq.

He holds the record for the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history at 24 hours and 18 minutes, in opposition to the 1957 Civil Rights Act. He began his filibuster by reading the texts of the election laws of all 48 states.

Mama always said, "If you can't say anything nice about a dead guy, best not to say anything at all."

I would note, however, the delicious irony of the Supreme Court's sodomy ruling running next to his picture on just about every front page in the country.

Another segregationist dead this week - Lester Maddox, and Georgia Governor, Dies at 87 http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/26/obituaries/26MADD.html

When the three black men tried to buy some of his chicken in July 1964, Mr. Maddox waved
a pistol at them and said: "You no good dirty devils! You dirty Communists!"

In the mid 1960's some 40 years ago Thurmond changed his position for whatever reason and voted to extend the voting rights act. He later became the first Southern Senator to integrate his staff. People do change, some for the better some for the worse. He was on the opposite side of the political spectrum from where I sit.

That decision, made when he was 60 years old, was probably politically expedient.

Colin, Colin,
People that aren’t worth respect when alive aren’t worth any more respect when they are dead, even though it’s a definite improvement.
At least now he can contribute something to the ‘growth’ of the world; compost.

Last week in Australia, an ‘underworld’ figure was shot dead. Apart from the fact that there were some children to witness the incident, that wasn’t a loss to the world either.
Just like when a member of a drug prostitution and gun peddling criminal biker gang is killed.
These kinds of people are all ‘useless statistics’.

Strom Thurman will be remembered as a segregationist. Most of his life was dedicated to the suppression of civil rights.

For that, alone, he should be dismissed by History for his cruelty.

Helen you should now by now I am not a cheerleader for anyone. Not very many things thurmand did I even agreed with though he did make some changes later in life but it could have been for politcal gain only. Only he and the lord knows the answer to that one. Just tires of Austy's endless blabber. Never has a good word for anyone and it really seems his only purpose is that of a board troll. Talking trash against the dead just puts you in the same gutter pool as them and puts you on the same level as the one you are so critical of. If he truly repented his ways before he passed than thats fine, if not than that judgement will be passed as well. Not one of you has gone through life without regrets and sin.

No, tomyou, I am not "talking trash". I am telling the truth about Strom Thurman. Check out a history book and you may modify your opinion.

Strom Thurman wanted the right to Lynch people in the south. In other words, hang people by their necks from a tree until they die. That is about as evil as one can get. And you believe that I belong in a gutter pool???

Nonsense.

Sweet jesus she can't even figure out I am not talking to her. I was responding to the comments austy ALWAYS makes. Some people are so trigger happy and paranoid they can't even figure out when they are not even being addressed. I even had austy's name in there twice and the reason for my post and still can't figure it out it had nothing to do with her. I don't have a problem at all about factual or newsprint posts on the subject there helen just the GUTTER DWELLING BS and name calling that AUSTY just can't help but blurt out on any given subject. DID YOU CATCH THAT I WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU YET !!!!!

So, why did you begin the message with my name and then address me as "you"?

Sorry that I misunderstood your message, Tomyou but I am sure that if you will read your first message again, addressed to me that you will understand. You never directly addressed Austy.

"tomyou, a colin cheerleader with a mini bear inane pot shot"

Because your previous statement. I addressed you because you pointed out the"pot shot". I then went on to list reason for said statement and refered to the other posters name twice. I did not realize I needed to make two seperate posts and thought that refering to the other individual you could then clearly see why I made the statement I did. If you read the post you just italized you'll see that I do mention austy by name and the "you" is clearly directed at austy because the subject had turned to austy as I did directly address him:

"Just tires of Austy's endless blabber. Never has a good word for anyone and it really seems his only purpose is that of a board troll"

I use his name and then refer to a "him" after that. So as you can easily see i did not refer to YOU as anything. I don't normaly aggree with your posts but I can say you don't resort to the name calling and gutter talk. My only beef is that that is the road that austy always takes regardless of the subject and that is why I made that off the cuff remark.

tomyou,
I'm most often here to entertain myself.
And yes often trolling but in no way does that have any bearing on the validity of ANY of my statements.

"Never has a good word for anyone and it really seems his only purpose is that of a board troll"

Now that is just a lie, you have just 'blabbered' that out with little concern for accuracy.

You have your priorities mixed up, I can cope with 'gutter talk' but not 'anti-humanity' talk.

Let the hungry get a job.
Smite the Muslims.
We need more guns,
There is no Global warming.
Crime is an ethnic thing.
I fought in the war, and you didn't so shut up.
Smite the gays.

And yet most of these same people that make such comments were the 1st I thought to convey their respects to kraftdinner when she reported the death of her cat.

How can you possibly believe that this thurmond prick went form black-lyncher to the 1st senator to employ a black secretary overnight and that he did it with good and honest intent.

I say it again,
Yep!
Thurmond has kicked the bucket and the sooner others like him are gone then the sooner these –ve influences will be around for our children.
The sooner they are gone, in the words of another of the same ilk ‘Charlton Heston from the NRA’
“those wise old dead WHITE guys”, won’t be around to influence others.

‘Sweet Jesus’ how’s your cat?
