Bush Shuns Calls to Legalize Gay Marriage
Wed Jul 30,11:42 AM ET

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages.

"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that," the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden.

Bush also urged, however, that America remain a "welcoming country" — not polarized on the issue of homosexuality.

"I am mindful that we're all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. "I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts."

"On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added.

Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages.

The Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that made homosexual sex a crime, overturning an earlier ruling that said states could punish homosexuals for having sex.

Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia (news - web sites) fired off a blistering dissent of the ruling.

The "opinion dismantles the structure of constitutional law that has permitted a distinction to be made between heterosexual and homosexual unions, insofar as formal recognition in marriage is concerned," Scalia wrote. The ruling specifically said that the court was not addressing that issue, but Scalia warned, "Do not believe it."

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.

To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states.

"As someone who's spoken out in strongly moral terms, what's your view on homosexuality?" a reporter asked the president.

"Yeah, I am mindful that we're all sinners," Mr. Bush replied. "And I caution those who may try to take the speck out of their neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own. I think it's very important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts, to be a welcoming country.

Just another blunder...and indication of intolerance.

In other words Bush is all for Christian tolerance in your heart as long as you don't have to really express it in any substantial concrete way.

Sounds like the long history of racial apologists who loved black people in principle as long as they didn't have to live next door to them or eat lunch beside them or hire them.

I sure hope that doesn't mean Lieberman is next. He's as scary as any born-again I've ever heard

WHY THE F IS THIS MAN SMILING?

I don’t know, but I am worried about it. I am worried about it because so
many Americans are morons addicted to sit-coms, reality TV, and romance
novels. Bush’s phony happy happy joy joy plays with those morons the same
way Reagan’s phony “optimism” worked for him.

What can you do in the face of such moronic fiddling while Rome burns? If
you point out the flames you are branded as a doom and gloom, blame-
America-first cretin. I know Bush’s act is a cynical charade, but here is what I
am worried about:

Imagine Howard Dean in a presidential debate. Bush would be phony,
deceptive, and disingenuous, but he would be HAPPY! Dean would be
honest, direct, and accurate, but he would come off as (and would certainly
be spun as) mean-spirited, a Bush-hater, and negative. That, my friends,
gives me pause this midsummer night.

Who among the Democratic candidates is nimble enough to deal with Bush’s
affectations of confidence and optimism? You do not win elections by being
right, a truism I can attest to with utter certainty learned in the trenches.
You win elections by getting the most votes.

And many of those votes can be had by Bush’s cynical capering… His clown-
like, painted-on grin and good humor. I am convinced Dean’s greatest asset,
his hard-charging take-no-prisoners style, would be a detriment in the face
of this Rovecraft. We need a candidate who can do something besides lob
grenades. We need… Who?

Edwards? The guy is good. The lawyer in him could nail Bush’s narrow ass to
the wall without sounding strident.

Kerry? Maybe. He is smooth and nuanced, highly intelligent, if a little stiff at
times. His military record is an embarrassment to Bush and Cheney.

Graham? Hmmmm… Hard to say. Maybe.

Gephardt? No way

Lieberman? Please…

Who will run best against the “What, Me Worry” buffoon?

Even the POPE sides with President Bush:

July 28, 2003, 7:59PM Vatican sets out to stop gay partner marriages Makes action plan for officials, public Associated Press

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican hopes to rally public opposition to gay marriages in a worldwide campaign spurred by its alarm over growing legal acceptance of same-sex unions in Europe and North America.

Pope John Paul II has been speaking out for months against legislative proposals to legalize same-sex marriages. But instructions to be released this week go a step further by outlining a course of action for politicians and other lay people to oppose extending the rights accorded to traditional couples, Vatican officials said.

The document was prepared by the church's guardian of orthodoxy, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and is to be released Thursday.

One official familiar with the document called it a "practical reflection" for both Catholic and non-Catholic politicians and public opinion in general.

It asks that the legal recognition accorded the traditional marriages not be extended to same-sex unions, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The document prescribes a course of action for politicians and lay communities and does not involve the clergy, Vatican officials said. It is expected to detail how the issue should be dealt with in public forums, including legislatures. The officials did not provide examples.

Catholic teaching says homosexuals should not be subjected to "unjust discrimination," but it also says gays should be chaste.

In January, the pope approved guidelines on church teachings for Catholic politicians saying that the church's opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage is not up for negotiation.

The Pope also seems to condone sodomizing children by his lack of action against high ranking clergy within his church. I suppose you support this also.

Even though, Democrats don't support same sex marriages and that the agruements against same sex marriages are illogical and will eventually erode, I think Bush could have given a more intelligent answer.

If the Catholic Church would put so much effort into the sexual offenses as they have and are currently doing to stop same sex marriage, they would help with their integrity.

Some people think that the Fatima message contained an order for the Catholic Church to submit to God and they recently refused to do so. If this is true, I wonder if another Fatima message was to put homosexuals equal to the others?

I do support President Bush in his belief that marriage should stay limited to a union between a man and a woman.

To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states. Even though I've read that 86% of Americans believe in a 'God', I'm just not sure if there are enough votes, in Congress, to make it happen.
