Bush deserves impeachment

By MARCIA WEIS

HOW DEPRESSING it is to read the letters of die-hard Bush supporters who persist in claiming that this man is a "great leader" who has brought "dignity and morality" to the White House.

These folks must define a great leader as one who produces the largest budget deficit in our history, who antagonizes our traditional allies and then has the gall to ask for their help in cleaning up the mess he created, who cons his countrymen into an unjustified war with no end in sight and who, as his crowning achievement, turns Iraqi cities into rubble, killing thousands of innocent Iraqis and American soldiers.

This is morality?

Alan Rhodes in his Aug. 17 commentary ("Administration critics put politics above country" refers to Bush's lies as "so-called." How about all those rhetorical lies - "compassionate conservatism," "no child left behind," "faith-based" social programs? They sound nice, but they've done little but camouflage the administration's lack of funding.

As for the other lies - those weapons of mass destruction - maybe we should be kinder and call them wishful thinking on Bush's part. Then there's the uranium thing - but that was somebody else's fault. The buck certainly doesn't stop with our fearless "leader."

Under Clinton we had eight years of surplus, money for the needs of our people and full employment; we had the respect and admiration of the world; and we had peace. Soon there will be a rush to universal health care, promoted first by the Clintons and already long established in the world's civilized nations.

Now we have a president who goes to prayer breakfasts but wouldn't recognize the truth or true Christianity if it bit him.

Millions of tax dollars were spent to impeach Clinton because he cheated on his wife and fibbed to Congress about it. His lie was in answer to a question that shouldn't have been asked.

Bush's bloody lies are costing lives and have destroyed the world's respect for us. Our country is now almost universally viewed as a blundering invader and occupier, even in Iraq, which we have "liberated." An intelligent leader would have been more knowledgeable about the culture and political divisions before going off half-cocked.

If ever a president deserved impeachment, it's George W. Bush. The photo op of this incompetent, hypocritical AWOL creature standing on the deck of a U.S. warship proclaiming the end of the war should nauseate any decent American.

We are paying a steep price for electing a C student, who partied his way through college, who wouldn't even have been admitted to Yale had it not been for his father, who as president clearly knows little about the world he must deal with.

Of course he has advisers, his defenders will say - but the top man should be at least as smart as they are. I wouldn't take my car to a repair shop where the boss couldn't tell a bad mechanic from a good one.

Bush even gave a job at the Pentagon to a convicted felon, John Poindexter.

There may still be hope for our country. Right beside Rhodes' commentary was the beautifully clear and rational article of Cynthia Munley ("Bush et al. undermine U.S. security". Many others deserve praise.

I have faith. The American people have always known when to throw out the garbage.

And college professors as a rule are democrate loyalists and usually will teach their left wing views as the only way.

You get one too.
